Wins the award for black cork of the month. This bottle was opened about 3 hours before dinnertime and was allowed to sit and breathe. Rian showing a teeny tiny bit of age. This 2008 poured a maroon color with violet tones. The nose was cinnamon, blueberry, grilled meat, blackberry, herbs. The entry is blackberry cassis, herbs although definitely cassis dominated. Power, depth, complexity all there. Still quite a bit of stiff toasty tannin on the finish. Rian is starting to gain my respect, although Levante is still my favorite. This wine was definitely singing tonight. — 9 years ago

Sweet strawberries, with a bit of brinyness and mild acidity. This is the Liguria di Levante, not the Golfo (hence based on Vermentino, not Merlot). The finish is unusually long for a rosè. Brought back from the home country a few weeks back... — 11 years ago

A definite 94 tonight, with some stiff competition but still held itself well and was several people's WOTN. This wine is a darker expression of cab at this point. Lots of blackberry cassis, blueberry, and truffle in the entry and middle. The wine seemed to almost get a little more youthful in the middle and finish, and I was very glad that it was enjoyed tonight along with a 99 Rudd, a 98 Phelps Bacchus, and a 95 Togni. This wine will continue to benefit from some additional time in the bottle. Very happy that I opened this one tonight for the group. Compared to the Levante, this Ponente seemed to express itself much earlier without as much of a decant. — 8 years ago

90% Moscatell, then the balance Macebeo and Viognier....really delicious: dry yet creamy and almost weighty in texture, with restrained aromatic qualities, yet layers of citrus and white stone fruit. Much more sophisticated than I expected at the price. — 10 years ago
