Alto Cinco

Cariñena Garnacha 2011

The 2011 vintage in Cariñena was hot and dry, with yields up to ten percent lower than average. The smaller crop gave the grapes more time to ripen on the vine, with harvest ten days later than typical. The village of Paniza enjoyed an even longer growing season than neighbors in lower, hotter elevations, with excellent flavor development in the grapes. Harvest took place from mid-‐September through the end of October. After harvest, the grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented primarily in stainless steel tanks. Grapes from lower elevations went through a cold maceration for several days to extract aromatics and berry fruit flavors, while grapes from the higher elevations were sent directly to the fermenter for an extended fermentation to preserve the intensity of flavor in the old vine grapes. The wine was aged for 6 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels for additional roundness and texture. The wine tastes of ripe, juicy wild strawberry, red cherry and blackberry framed by supple tannins. Floral notes of violet and rose petal complement the oak notes of mocha and vanilla on the finish.Try Alto Cinco with roasted meats & poultry or hearty fish stews. With crispness and silky tannins, it’s delightful paired with tomato dishes such as classic Catalan grilled bread with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil or simply on its own. — 12 years ago

Viura Chardonnay 2017

One of the grapes in this blend is a Spanish original, the other is common over much of the winegrowing globe. The mixture here makes Viura the star. Intense minerality is at the forefront, with superb aromas of lemon and lime zest. Acidity is racy, while the Chardonnay brings tropical notes into the palate. I'll bet a plate of oysters would pair up nicely, or pasta with olive oil and pepper. — 7 years ago

Senorio De Aldaz

Navarra Garnacha 2015

The first night I pulled it open, it was completely unremarkable. I was using it for a coq au vin. Purchased at GO for $5.99. After leaving it open on the counter for another day, it developed lots of plummy, raisiny and fruity notes. Nice color. Great for the frugal and patient. — 8 years ago

Bodega Otazu

Premium Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Navarre. A region in northern Spain bordering Basque, La Rioja and Aragon.  It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit.  This wine brings me there.  Let me tell you about the 2010 Otazu Premium Cuvee Senorio de Otazu.  I want to break it down quickly and then opine on the wine specifically.
VISUAL: Clear, ruby on the edges fading to dark twilight deeper in.
NOSE: Slight cherry apple without O2, after a few swirls it opens up to sweet strawberry and banana scent.  Very nice, not overpowering or too fruit forward.
PALATE: There’s oak in there, but only slight. Chocolate, barbecue, cherry, pistachio (barely). This is a wine that is sleek and sexy without being too obvious.  It’s that girl at the beach who has no idea how beautiful she is, and just wants to throw the frisbee. The wine is NOT a tease, it’s just sweet, beautiful and very cool.
FINISH: No acidity, smooth finish with just a hint of tannins. It finishes without excessive echo.
AND NOW LET ME OPINE: I love this wine. It’s a perfect example of a quality Spanish wine: 50% Can Sauv, 30% Tempranillo,   20% Merlot. It’s a fantastic wine that I could see enjoying with a spicy curry, or even just on it’s own.  Grab a bottle of this, a good frisbee disc and head out to the nearest beach for a game of Ultimate Frisbee. You will not be disappointed. My Parker Rating for this is a solid 90 points.

Senorio del Aguila

Reserva Cariñena Tempranillo Blend 2002

On the nose, copious prune and raisin, underscored by a pleasant nuttiness, culminating in a distinct sherry aroma. On the tongue, juicy and full. The prune follows through, along with a nice black cherry, all of which is mellowed out by stout, toasty oak. The finish is med-long, warm, and very smooth. Fantastic for $10.00. — 13 years ago
