Cain Vineyard & Winery

Cain Five Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Way too young now but destined for greatness. Chris Howell knows how to showcase what the mountain gives him. This wine, with its hints of well integrated Brett, is not only distinctive for Napa, but stands out against others from the mountain AVAs. Cellar for a long time! — 10 years ago

La Vermontoise Saison / Farmhouse Ale

First time I see anything from them in Boston.A decent Saison, with raisins and faint cloves overtones on top of hay and grass. I hope the rest of their stuff is significantly better — 10 years ago

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales

Baudelaire Beer iO Saison

Another terrific beer from Jolly Pumpkin. Definitely improves with some time in the glass; much better on tap at the brewpub in Ann Arbor. Doesn't have the depth of the La Roja (which is by far my favorite JP), but still a great beer. — 11 years ago

Ton of Brett in here. Had a smoky thing going on at the back end. Lot of fruit still and acidity to match. Just funky and weird but I liked it. Pretty cool wine. — 9 years ago

Best saison I've ever had. Near perfect beer. Bottle conditioned. Dry apricot, lemon peel, fresh hay, saison funk, it goes on and on to a bone dry, and tart finish. — 9 years ago

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 1995

Complex nose of leather, hay, dried cherry, raspberry preserves, dried rose petals, star anise and white pepper. The Brett is there but not overwhelming. Tannins still lingering on the finish. Slightly passed its peak but still enjoyable. — 10 years ago

Bodegas Faustino

Gran Reserva Faustino I Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2001

Body medium +, Brett, menthol, pepper, strawberry, cherry, earthy, oak. A bit "hot". Bottle is atypical. You can't see content. Great with beef deli. Grown at high altitude. 13.5deg. A very pleasant surprise! Don't buy a bottle by its label. — 11 years ago

Château Léoville Barton

A sincerity to this wine, an old world drinker's delight. New world lovers may not be flattered by this. Also, super clean, no Brett. Will still make it for AT LEAST 10 years. — 13 years ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Really on point. Brett and vegetal quality actually find great balance in this challenging vintage. Perhaps a function of better fruit making it to the pavilion. Either way I imagine this is what most young Bordeaux tasted like pre-1980s. — 9 years ago
