Meaning “hillside” in Portuguese, a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc & 4% Merlot. Small production, big wine, black berry fruit aromas with sweet spice notes. Flavors of black cherry, raspberry and currants with cacao, with smooth tannins. Great balance, enticing character, lingering finish ending with hints of earthy tones. Has room to age. Very nice. — 7 years ago
From the wine list at EMP bought by a new friend at the table next to us to go mano a mano against the 88 La Turque I shared. Slightly darker red and more pure in color. Amazing aroma that is more linear than the animalistic La La but in the same league. Hit its stride right out of the pop and pour gate. Lovely perfume with a more briary nose but speaks Cote Rotie from the get go. Perfectly integrated fruit and structure. Best Jamet I've had. Thanks to Danny for this treat. — 8 years ago
Smooth. Drank at BP. $88 — 9 years ago
Imagine biting into a juicy, ripe, liqueur-soaked peach-tangerine hybrid. #Burgenland #austrianwine — 9 years ago
Dark ruby color with aromatic, blackberry, black currant, a bit of tobacco, eucalyptus and violet aromas. On the palate it's medium-bodied, and well made with an appealing texture, dusty tannins, and good acidity with blackberrry, black currant, black cherry, and a hint of dark chocolate flavors. Lingering sweet finish. Blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. 14.5 alcohol. Retail - $28 Very good value! — 10 years ago
Stunning wine 88 vintage. cherries raspberries bacon fat and savory herbs. Well balanced with acidity that really brings out the fruit. — 11 years ago
My favorite from a vertical of 86, 88, 93, 95, 97 from Mag, 02 and 04. Personality in spades. — 12 years ago
Beautiful! Quite different than the '88 and '89. Not as heavy and unctuous. Very light, great acidity with the perfect amount of sweetness. Had en magnum. — 12 years ago
Pale translucent with an initial exotic outburst of pineapple and melon, then a bit more subdued with grassy aromas and a strong note of ginger. On the palate with a great mouthfeel, juicy and with a touch of tannin. Ripe pear & melon with a ginger / spicy edge, a pinch of saltiness and ending with a mineral, lemony streak. Light but with character, highly drinkable and delightful. — 6 years ago
Today was my first time to host Wednesday Wine Committee. I’ve had the good fortune of attending on and off over the last two years and was delighted to finally host a lunch. As many of the wines I brought today I’ve posted on here before, I’m posting the white wine of the day and the red wine of the day. As always, the format of 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert wine was in play and everything was tasted blind.
As my 30th birthday approaches next week, I wanted to bring a bottle of something special, so I decided on a birth year wine as a small early birthday celebration. Absolutely shocked at the color...was as dark as an ‘07 Farella that was next to it! Acidity, fruit and finish were all insane for the age. Barnyard funk blew off easily and revealed bing cherry, dates, currant and a killer herbal acidic finish. Tannins are still providing nice structure here. ‘88 wasn’t a great Napa vintage, but this just goes to show you how quality producers churn out age worthy wines regardless of vintage. A real treat. Credit to @Mark Flesher for helping me get this! — 7 years ago
Our monthly 4th Friday event at the storage facility. No requirements, just wine you want to share with others! Always an enjoyable time.
Special place in my heart for this winery. A few months ago, I had an '88 go celebrate my birth year. It was STELLAR. This is pushing forward easily...after an hour of air, the fruit and secondary earth and funk notes came out. So good! Thanks Walter! — 8 years ago
So in the battle is who is the best child... we paired the 88 vs the 90 (son vs daughter birth year). Both were outstanding but the 88 had more age in the color and softness on the nose and palate. Family currently arguing over density but for me the 90 was more dense. Lots of mixed fruit leather smoke and terroir which is very French but great for those who enjoy it. So in the name of family peace we rate both as outstanding but the 90 (the daughter) is a bit bigger. Cheers — 9 years ago
Crisp, clean, just enough oak taste. Smooth, clean. Very enjoyable. — 10 years ago
Really nice Barbera. Good balance between alcohol and fruit. Would pair well with pork BBQ or even a spicy shrimp. — 11 years ago
Wow. Delicious. Much richer and new world in style than the 88 which was tasted in conjunction. — 11 years ago
Good dessert wine! — 13 years ago
88 mouton with Keith harding art work. The nose upon opening was sublime. As it decanted and opened, it was a bit disjointed. Has a lot of potential but at this age I think it’s not going to come together. The nose weakened, and the body to finish is a bit jarred. — 6 years ago
Wonderful evening at the City Club courtesy of Jeff’s hosting at the Friday group. Cellar guessing Jeff is a dangerous game as he’s the type who plans to throw curveballs! All wines served blind.
Ageless. Based on color, I immediately thought Napa but the palate had me second guessing. Some rose petal, spice and tart cherry. Cedar. This tastes so much younger than the ‘88 I opened a few months back. Wonderful wines. — 7 years ago
Fun night of cali cabs. 88 Mayacamas, 06 Lewis and 11 Faust — 8 years ago
Smells and tastes like peaches. Dry and flavorful. Good acidity. Well balanced. — 9 years ago
Kano, you are such a tough grader! It's '88 La Mish, and it was the first thing I'd ever tasted after becoming a new home owner. Absolutely delicious, amongst the sweetest nectar I'd ever enjoyed in my life! Far from perfect, but pretty close to one of the finest gifts life can offer. Thank you! — 9 years ago
1985 rose vintage Dom Ruinart. Deep salmon, orange hue. Ripe apricot and butterscotch. 10g dosage. On palate, rich and porcini and truffle. Meaty and leather. Acidity is integrated. Soy sauce and apricot. Good length. Prefer the '88. But great wine. — 10 years ago
Line up of Dom Ruinart BDB Mags: 88, 90, 93. All worthy- 90 So powerful/balanced and slightly more tropical. — 11 years ago

Not the best example I have had for the 88 vintage but still enjoyable . — 6 years ago
