My WOTN at the Charlotte Hirsch dinner, showing what proper aging can do to bring out a wine's fine points and soften its rough edges. All the elements of this wine were working together in harmony. Soaring floral aromatics, deep, rich fruits and a wonderfully smooth, long finish made this wine a real pleasure to drink. The more Hirsch I drink, the more I realize that patience is rewarded with their wines. 2011 was widely panned as a tough vintage in CA, but this 2011 was absolutely singing. — 7 years ago
Black cherries, figs, graphite, cigar box, dried thyme, dried oregano, black pepper, sun dried tomato, iron. Sharp focused acid/wide rough velvet tannin balance, medium-full bodied, juicy texture, long herbal-smoky finish. Textbook Chianti, standout herbal character generous to most tomato based Italian food pairings. From a magnum. — 9 years ago
Guessed it as a southern Rhone, but not as a CdP. A bit too rustic and rough? — 10 years ago
Started off with an oaky nose with a rather minty and rough palate. After breathing for about an hour, a different taste profile came together with pleasant black fruit notes. Smooth medium bodied texture of a medoc. — 10 years ago
Just a little dusty and rough on finish. Beautiful fruit filled flower nose. — 11 years ago
Tannins are still a bit rough; may need a bit more time in the bottle. Sagrantino and Umbria are both intriguing. — 12 years ago
Deep, inky, and chocolatey. Needs more time in the bottle. Really tight even after 3 hours in decanter. Cassis, cocoa nibs, and subtle bell pepper. Full bodied and well structured. Great wine from a really rough vintage. — 9 years ago

Always so reliable. It does not even matter that 13 is a rough vintage. Nose shows the vintage but beyond that is minerals galore. A bit of a custardy note that I find blows off after a bit. Palate is lush, rich and concentrated with great purity. Still has adequate acidity and a long finish. The minerals will come with air. Obscured by froot now. — 10 years ago
Always a pleasure. No rough edges and tons of depth and complexity. Dark fruit, mocha and forest floor with a smooooooth finish. — 10 years ago

Beautiful English cider; pure fruit, dry, clean finish. — 12 years ago
Enjoying this unique wine one day after an actual rough day. Crisp, effervescent, and mineral. Nice on a humid, late summer day. — 7 years ago
My favorite flavor profile of sort of bready cider — 8 years ago
Can’t tell whether it is disappointing or just too early to drink. Still a bit rough around the edges and darker fruited than I would have expected. Maybe elegance will come with time. — 8 years ago
A weird bit of lacquer and heat on the nose, which mostly blows off and settles down to more classic cab notes. Was a bit better with food. Has mostly dark cassis fruit, still some dry tannins on the finish, good acidity and some oak feels yet unresolved. These drink beautifully young. Maybe still in a rough patch. — 9 years ago
2010, still young, a little rough but a beautyful strengh! — 10 years ago
Hot day. Cold Cider. Not overly complex but well balanced and thirst quenching — 10 years ago
I like this more than I should. Rough around the edges, with occasional interruptions of "green" flavors, but overall just fantastic concentration and structure. Delish. — 10 years ago
