This is the only Carignane-based wine in the Napa Valley AVA. 67% Carignane and 33% Petite Sirah from Al Frediani's classic vineyard in Calistoga. Last time I tried this it was a little more savory, but this bottle was showing a bit more of the warm vintage with bigger dark fruit. There was still a gorgeous underlayer of savory herbs, but it didn't distract from the beautiful fruit. The Archive is the 2nd label of Relic Wines by winemaker Mike Hirby. He's one of the most consistently great winemakers in the US. — 11 years ago

So that happened again. Another relic from a bygone age. Unfamiliar vintage but hey why not?

Acidity high. Tonnes of secondary odors, a very dirty, dirty girl indeed. Mossy, damp, barn yardy goodness. Colour still decent, definitey a rusty tinge to it, much like the fender of the chevy Malibu robbing the 7-11 beside you now.

Violet color with appealing mixed black and blue fruit, dried herb, vanilla, chocolate, and spice aromas. On the palate it's full-bodied, and concentrated with an oh-so supple texture and good acidity. It shows baked blueberry, blackberry, vanilla, chocolate, and cardamom flavor and a lingering finish. Kashaya vineyard is only 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean, keeping the vines cool, but high enough to reduce the fog effect and increase sun exposure. Nice roundness and fruit for a Pinot Noir. Could drink this all year! — 9 years ago
