California Pinot Noir 2016

One of my favorites. Just the right amount of fruit, wood, and terroir. A bit acidic but not too much. Pairs nicely with cheese and charcuterie. — 8 years ago

Paul Jaboulet Aîné

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 1996

Incredible. Jaboulet family apparently inconsistent in final years of ownership, but this one had everything. So dense still, with lots of kalamata olive, olive brine, cherry, blackberry, black pepper, leather, cured meat, earth. Savory, sweet, powerful, elegant, hit every end of the taste spectrum. Super long. In magnum — 9 years ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Offerus Saint-Joseph Syrah 2010

Really tannic (the hard stemmy type), dark, olive, lavender, rather dense. Either needs more time in bottle or less stems in the cuve — 10 years ago

Domaine Jamet

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1988

What? So good. All the olive and pepper and leather that you would expect and plenty of game and mushroom as well. I don't suppose I'll have another chance to taste this, so I'll have to rely on memory of something so delicious. — 11 years ago

Cailloux Vineyard Syrah 2010

Raspberry jam, huckleberry compote, crushed black cherry, peach pit, violet liquor, bbq meat, fur, licorice whip, olive tapenade, sanguine, beef jerky, iodine, coffee grounds, smoke, pink peppercorns, a touch of leather. The salinity this has is unreal. It has real class and carries its weight well. Balance of the acid is keen, a cool-climate personality. Tannins are beautiful, resolving but bringing texture and posture. This could go another decade easily, but the balance is there now. Brownie points for the length and complexity. — 6 years ago
