Old Man Scary Cellars

Mad Fritz

The Old Man and Death Stout

One of three offerings from Mad Fritz last night @ NVWTG. Not usually a stout fan, I thoroughly enjoyed this well balanced brew. Wish I had snapped pics of the others! Great beer with a great story. Serious craftsmanship at work. — 9 years ago

Il Faggeto

Pietranera Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2007

2007 is impressive, mostly sangiovese. Wine expert Eric Lenard says, "Little old man in Pienza shared a bottle of his secret stash." — 10 years ago

The Forager

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Lovely. Smooth, peaceful, and well suited for nearly any old occasion. Leaves your average man wishing he knew how to better articulate what indeed was so worth mentioning in the first place. — 10 years ago

Meritaggio Napa Valley Super Tuscan Blend 2011

If the '07 is the wise old man, this is the early-40s cougar. Lively on the front, saucy. A lot going on, confident. Will enter round, sage wisdom in a few years (post-menopause?). — 11 years ago

Freakshow The Strongest Man on Earth Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Dark ruby in color with a purplish Rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, cherries, licorice, figs, cloves, earth, leather, green pepper, mocha, coffee, chocolates, tobacco, beef jerky and peppercorn.

Full bodied, bold and jammy, with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry and extremely fruity on the palate, with blackberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, tart cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, cloves, herbs, earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with soft tannins, black pepper and tart strawberries.

This 4 year old from Lodi, California, is still drinking nicely, but probably on the way down. Lots of vegetable notes and very little tannins, this time.

Thank you Stacy and Dan, for sharing.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

MAN Vintners

Tormentoso Paarl Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2011

Layers fragrance with a little flower flavor. It gave me an illusion of tasting Riesling. Finally I think this bottle should be open next summer... — 10 years ago

Château Potensac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1997

Man what a steal! 18 year old Medoc AOC, showing both mature and youthful fruit character, a little dusty leather, pipe tobacco, ever so slightest hint of brett. The palate really delivered more than I expected--broad and mouth filling, tannins have grip but have that ironed out feel that is my favorite thing about aged Bordeaux. K&L $25! — 10 years ago

How does Patrick Arnould pack so much Pinot Noir scale and so much freshness into one bottle? Super old vines don't hurt, but this man has some magic! — 11 years ago

Château Maugey

Le Jean-Marc Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

Fabien Lainé
9.2

Chateau Maugey - Le Jean Marc - 2004 Accorded myself a souvenir #winelover a treat, I remember it amazing wine for about 10euros a the time, I still have a few bottles of several vintages - near Libourne it was this "stubborn" and self educated winemaker, Jean Marc Maugey, a golden fingers #winemaker, running a small family estate with nature rules, he crafts wines like the Old and Legendaries #Bordeaux wines in the 19th and 20th century - Noble, originals, authentic and of character - focusing on Merlot and Malbec with small yields ! An inspiring free artist ! 😊 and a man full of passion and stories 😉 — 11 years ago

Long Vineyards

Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

My wife and I have no idea how this came into our cellar, or anything about Long Vineyards really. But man, this is a beautiful Napa Cabernet, very much in the style of @Cathy Corison and White Rock Vineyards. The 22 months in new French has completely integrated after 14 years, and now it is redolent (first time using that word) with cassis, black olive tapenade, dried herbs, and fine, dusty tannins.

When we grill steaks, this is the type of old-school California we really dig.

Domaine Leroy

Les Cazetiers Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 1949

Vintage 1949 in Burgundy according to Broadbent: “..most perfect end of a decade - elegant, well-balanced wines”; Clive Coates in his book Cote D'Or: "best vintage of 40's all-perfect beauty and purity”; Robert M. Parker Jr.: “it was the best of post world war II vintages before 1959”
Henri Leroy at that time was négociant based in Auxey-Duresses, his mythical daughter Lalou Bize-Leroy in 1949 was only seventeen.
Les Cazetiers is amongst the most elevated of Premier Cru site in Gevrey-Chambertin - and indeed the whole of Burgundy.
I drank this precious bottle on Mount Etna with #FrankCornelissen and other dear friends. Uncork this bottle lead to a surgical operation. Just begun to pull it out, a light breath of wine molecule with air bubbles magically have emerged on the surface of the cork. It's been like witness the passing away of a dying old man (or Pinot Noir must be a woman?) That humanized wine had held "élan vital", hope and breath inside him for the last 66 years! A miracle of a wine still so tasty, robust, citrusy, vibrant, earthy, incredibly alive and well-preserved despite color and neck level did not bode so well.. that's what I thought and I'll remember until I die: "the wine was waiting for us to drink it up, he gave off his mortal blow to offer us life, joy and smile!"
