Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier

Grüner Silvaner 2016

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our guest conductor David Newman is leading a live-to-picture performance of Leonard Bernstein’s score for “West Side Story”, originally directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, and with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
For live-to-picture productions, the orchestra performs the entire movie score in real time as the film unspools. (Vocals, dialogue and effects are isolated from the original music track.) The BSO installed very fancy and large LED screens on the perimeter of the Shed facing the Lawn, amazing!

Loving this bottle, notes are a little different tonight, citrus pith, green apple and cooked grain (oh so faint tho). The show ended and we finished this in the parking lot as we waited for the insane traffic to dissipate. So much better once it warms up. 3hr decant before the show.

Penner-Ash

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Lynn Penner-Ash and her husband, Ron, started Winery in 1998, focusding on small-lot productions. A beautiful nose with berry and floral scents dancing in the glass. Fresh fruit flavors, raspberry and sweet cherry, hints of vanilla spice, great balance with acidity. Firm tannins, lingering finish ending with cedar tones and a nudge of pepper. An enjoyable Pinot at a reasonable price. Has short term aging benefits, but why wait. — 6 years ago

Our spirits buyer David just returned from Oaxaca preaching the parallels between Mezcal & Burgundy: tiny productions, individuality and synergy with food. I had my doubts. This will be the first spirit to go in my wine journal in over a decade- our homemade tacos made the spirit come alive with soulful, smoky complexity... And I thought anything over 14% was a disaster with food! — 9 years ago

Elke Vineyards

Mary Elke Boonville Barter Pinot Noir 2012

Very pleasant boutique bottling from a superior vintage featuring a texture of black pepper, black tea, savory and dark cherry. Purchased for low $20s, this producer does small productions beside selling fruits to leading Mendocino producers. Low level of tannin would make this a an easy choice for by-the-glass and for many Pinot fans — 10 years ago

The Relic Shiraz Blend 2004

On the nose; a bit of a brett bomb to start. Even after 11 years in the bottle, it needed a good 2 hour decant. Stewed fruits of; huckleberry, boysenberries, blueberries, plums, black raspberries, dark & liqueured cherries. Black raspberry cola, figs & dates, black & white pepper, touch of smoke & grilled meats, menthol, used leather, dry stems, dark minerals, loamy dry top soil, right amount of baking spices, lilacs & liquid violets. The body is full, round & lush. Tannins perfectly resolved. They still have a little baby teeth. The structure, length, tension and balance are near perfect. Stewed fruits of; huckleberry, boysenberries, blueberries, plums, black raspberries, dark liqueured cherries & strawberries haunting the palate here and there. Black raspberry cola, figs & dates, black & white pepper, a touch of smoke & grilled meats, menthol, used leather, dry stems, dark minerals, loamy dry top soil, right amount & mix of baking spices, lilacs, liquid violets & red florals. The acidity is perfect and acts like a waterfall over the palate. The fruit floral, lightly spiced finish goes on and on and on. Standish does not have a U.S. importer as his wines are small productions and he has no issues selling nearly all of them down under. You can order from his mailing list but, the shipping costs from Australia are stupid. Look for bottles on the secondary markets. You’ll be glad you did. If you have or had reservations about Australian wine or Shiraz vs. Syrah, Dan’s wines will end those thoughts. We tasted with Dan at his winery in April. He is extremely knowledgeable and a very talented Winemaker. He made Torbreck for years before starting his own winery. Photos of; his Estate, Dan and his low yield vines. His yield was an extremely low half ton per acre on this vintage. — 7 years ago

@Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher, this bottle & the bottle they have came from the same cellar. You have the assurance from my bottle. If it’s bad, I’ll reimburse you for it. How’s that? Just ship it in 60 degree weather rather than mid summer 90’s +. Shouldn’t be too hard this time of year.

One of the few companies in Franciacorta which boasts the
#Guyot system. Very limited productions, bottles for sale no earlier than 10 years after harvest. Wines produced only when the vintages are considered "live".
Started to open after some time in the glass, oxidative layers, delicate mousse, shows up a medicinal background, good stuff.

Sine Qua Non

No. 6 Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir 2001

I’m an unabashed SQN fan and I believe I enjoyed this more than most, although I will concede that Manfred’s magic touch isn’t as evident in his PN as it is in his other varietal productions. This was a (yes of course) big Pinot Noir with gritty tannins, underbrush, kirsch, dark cherry and a thicker than expected mouthfeel. Still showing young. Thank you @Steve Anderson — 6 years ago

Elouan

Oregon Rosé Blend 2017

A true Rosé make from Pinot Noir and not an after thought or by product of other productions, actually one of the few I really like. Light salmon color with fruit and floral aromas. On the palate strawberries and cherries, some citrus notes, balanced acidity. Smooth character, medium finish ending with a slight mineral character. Nice value. Tasting Sample. — 6 years ago

Webster Cellars

Proprietary Napa Valley Red Blend 2013

Truly noteworthy wine drinking wonderfully now and will only get better with some time. Living in Bordeaux and all over Europe allowed namesake and winemaker Keith Webster a personal look at the world's best wines. Settling in Napa he's now crafting ultra-luxury micro productions of wines he was inspired by, like this one called Right Bank. At 13.9% alcohol it resembles a right bank in more than name. Delicious, "farmer's market fresh" dark red fruits, shimmering garnet/ruby color with soft notes of spice, vanilla, cinnamon and lavender. Pure, clean and fresh mouth feel, good acid, tight, neutral tannins. 100cs production, best of luck finding. Delicious! — 7 years ago

Kosta Browne

Kanzler Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013

One of Kosta's bigger productions at 665 cases, this wine has a lot of complexity. Aged for 16 months in French oak (40% new). Deep red with ripe fruit and fresh floral aromas. On the palate the wine is a bit more timid with soft fruit flavors of cherry and currants and gentle spices mixing nicely together. Well balanced with vivid acidity, and woody notes on the lingering finish ending with a little tannic punch. Tasting Sample. — 8 years ago

Soma

Limited Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

It is fantastic having such good neighbors. Soma produced by Marita's Vineyards is her fathers winery which produces limited productions and bottle ages much longer than most other Napa wineries. Earth, cedar, eucalyptus, dark cherry, black currants, with a long finish. A classic premium Napa Cab Sauv. — 8 years ago
