Collezione Ca' Del Pipa Colle Cristi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Corvina Blend 2015

Huge nose of plum, lavender, strawberry jam, raspberry jam, vanilla, almond extract, and cranberry. Big red fruit on the palate of dark cherry, fresh raspberry, cranberry, as well as black tea, licorice, menthol, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, leather, white pepper, sage, oak, and blackberry. Medium plus tannins, high alcohol, and high acid. — 5 years ago

Bolgheri Piastraia SuperTuscan Blend 2013

Really good Bolgheri, great value. Refined and nicely arrayed palate of cocoa, chocolates and dark red fruit. The Syrah adds some oomph and structure. A yummy candied cherry quality and grippy tannins suggest additional cellar time could be rewarded. — 6 years ago

Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

Strong sharp almost acrylic smell followed by rich fruity aroma, plumb - oak - layered rich and thick. Later on almost like expensive tea with a complex and fragrant bouquet .

Taste is sharp at first with stringent dry tannic. Powerful and strong. Followed by fruit. Plumb, cherry, stone fruit. Crisp and refreshing. Cuts though the fat like a knife. And ends with a bitter sweetness that makes you want to take another sip.

Not as amazing as I remembered back in 2017 in Montepulciano. But good in its own way. Softened much more the 2nd day. Maybe I should decant for 5hrs next time.

La Court Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2010

— 11 years ago

Piastraia Bolgheri 1997

Across the board, complex at every turn. Although this showed some age, having been harvested I've 16 years earlier, this monster is still gripping with significant aroma of dried rose, earth & pencil shavings. Slight aldehydic notes on the finish, loads of tannin, high alcohol, acidity, complexity & length. Could probably still cautiously age another 5-10 years. — 11 years ago

Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese Blend 2009

Olga Tuttle
9.9

Sicilian wine from the base of Mount Etna. 95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% Nerello Cappuccio. Soft but chalky, earthy, more low tones, herbaceous but not too much. Medium body, slight rhubarb, but again- not in the way wines can be when they are too young to drink. Really lovely wine. Apparently, the winery is no longer making wine due to lack of interest from the family heirs. — 12 years ago

As I understand it, their vineyard's been purchased by Marco de Grazia from the excellent Etna label Tenuta Della Terre Nere-- so the grapes are in good hands! Mmm, Nerello Mascalese!

Trebulanum Terre del Volturno IGT Casavecchia 2012

Old school rustic Italian, quite dark fruited, salty. Medium body. Very tannic on the back end, very structured wine. Substantial acid. Needs a couple hours of air to come together and show properly. Pair with 🍝 for a pretty pretty good time. // turns into something special on day 2 — 8 years ago

I applaud your patience to get to day two on so many wines here.

Turd Ferguson

@Jenks honestly, most red wine I drink these days I prefer on day 2. When I open a bottle I usually immediately decant half of it to my trusty 375, cork it, and stick it in the fridge. 2-3-4 days later these babies sing!
Turd Ferguson

Turd Ferguson

@Jenks the bigger, more conventional red wines I mean. The super natty, lighter / carbonic / no SO2 stuff doesn't usually hold up so I pound that. Heyo.
