Oh my, what a Cabernet. Seductive, charming and drinkable, but I would bet my bottom dollar that with good cellaring this would be a stunner. — 11 years ago

Matthiasson Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2013

The clippers give it away every time, this is the Cabernet Franc from Matthiasson and a firm nod of appreciation to its home back in the Loire. The one critique I would say is that is tastes like it was picked early (as expected from this producer) but maybe a touch too early as the tannins are a little drying and the acidity a little too noticeable, overpowering the finish taking it a little our of balance. A noble effort however as the right fruit and spice aromatics and flavors are present. Have a classic Chinon or if you have had one you know what I mean. — 10 years ago

TK! Can you elaborate on the "picked early" comment? Is that something Matt is known for? In a negative way? I just ask because I thoroughly enjoyed the 2011 Matthiasson Napa Cab just two nights ago.

CT, absolutely known for it and not a bad thing as most in Napa pick later. Matt picks early compared to other producers in Napa. Your picking window is everything as the winemaker tastes the fruit (some send it it labs for extra analysis) and deems it ready to pick. One day can make a difference, small or huge. If it's sunny or rainy, it can add more sugar or dilute with more water respectively.

Matthiasson Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2011

Wonderful high acid and refreshing. No tropical fruit here. A light nuttiness. Some of my favorite whites being made in CA today. — 12 years ago
