Textbook! Unique Chablis earthy minerality exudes marine chalkiness, flint, chicken broth, and bright lemon-oil tinged fruit. Intense flavors glide effortlessly (as if on a mag-lev track) across the palate. Intensely stony and pure and long. Still youthful. Really classy. — 8 years ago
Saline, limes, limestone. Lovely wine. — 9 years ago
Wow, real knockout stuff. This is not domestic Muscadet - there's not much in common besides the grape. It has the bright, pure fruit but it is put together in a much fuller style, more like a white Burgundy (minus the oak) than Muscadet. I don't say Chablis because while it's an intensely mineral wine and cranked up to 11 in that department, it's not a marine minerality. The mineral element here is volcanic (and so is the soil), bringing to mind all those cliches about aromas bursting from the glass and so forth, and it's every bit as driving on the palate. — 9 years ago
The vineyards are in Farges-les-Macon. The limestone here is marly and loaded with quartz and marine fossils. It comes through in the wine. — 10 years ago
Last suitcase wine from brought home from Corsica. On the nose, ruby grapefruit, ocean spray (real ocean, not the juice), minerals. In the mouth, very saline with citrus, white flowers and excellent minerality. Long finish. Solid wine. — 4 years ago
Bright, balanced and good lingering mouthfeel — 6 years ago
The fruit for this Pinot comes from two of the coolest, most coastal parts of this appellation, linked by the influence of the Pacific’s cool marine air, which delays ripening. Bright Ruby with berry fruit, citrus and warm spice. On the palate, raspberry and cherry, tangy, with cedar notes and earthy tones. Bright acidity, soft expressive tannins, lingering finish ending with woody spice. Very nice, has room to age. — 7 years ago
Ah, that Riverbench Pinot Noir....nestled in the Santa Maria Valley, Riverbench specializes in mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The One Palm vintage is made from a single clone, 667, which is typically a blending Pinot for estate cuvées. Per usual, the clone is a finicky one, showing wide variability depending on climate - Too warm? Sugars concentrate and odd flavors emerge, (think apple). Too cold? Tight, spiciness emerges, (think all spice). Riverbench farms the Santa Maria AVA which benefits from an excellent marine influence and a wonderful stewed red cabbage terroir flavor point. Always a favorite of mine - (I did get married there) - and paired with a Chirashi Style rice bowl. Delish! ~$42 | #riverbench #pinotnoir #santamariavalley
On the eyes: Clear, light ruby, quite bright, med stain, med tears, no gas/floc.
On the nose: Stewed cranberry, tart cherry, cedar, slate, hints of braised red cabbage, med alcohol.
On the tongue: med acid, med tannin, med alcohol, med body, smooth. Sharp cherry, pomegranate, cranberry, hint of red cabbage, finishing with clove and star anise. Nice long pleasant finish, benefits from room temperature (began drinking at 60 degrees), and decanting. — 7 years ago

This bottle of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild replicates the one poured at the château several months earlier. The bouquet offers black fruit, a little dustiness, leather and light marine notes, but again, it never slips into fifth gear. It just lacks vivacity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin, modest fruit concentration and a monochromatic finish that feels suppressed by that summer’s warmth. To reiterate, there are Super Seconds that clearly outperform this First Growth in 1990. Tasted at Noble Rot's “Xmas” dinner. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2019)

The 2015 Ramey ‘Hyde VIneyard’ Chardonnay is a simply gorgeous new wine that is one of the best of its kind by superstar winemaker, David Ramey. Set on clay loam soils, the strongly marine-influenced Hyde Vineyard has gained an international reputation for producing outstanding Chardonnay grapes. This Carneros bottling shows intense nutmeg, vanilla creme brulee, macadamia nut and heavy whipping cream flavors that impress. Lithe and rich, this gorgeous bottling will cellar well for the next ten to fifteen years. Drink 2019-2033- 94 — 5 years ago
Wine # 2 in tonight’s tasting pretty and granache — 6 years ago
It's been a while since I've had a chance to taste the 2009 Gourt De Mautens, and i must say that I'm pretty impressed with it's evolution. Here I found a haunting bouquet of blackberry and marine-inspired minerality, along with moist earth, hints of animal musk, dusty florals and sweet dark spices. It was vibrant and finessed on the palate, yet deceptively so, as mineral-encrusted blackberry and cherry fruit gave way to sweet spice and herbal tones on a silky frame with sweet tannin. The finish was long and polished, showing black fruit and spice contrasted by a hint of sweet herbs and lingering tannin. What a beautiful wine, which I'm so happy to revisit and feel assured that there are many years of development ahead. #rasteau #jeromebressy #rhone — 7 years ago

Much different with food - sturdier and robust. Drinks much lighter without. Works both ways...not a favorite, but very solid and tasty.
