La Despensa Boutique Winery

Love and Squalor

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

Today's selection for contemplating hurricane Irma's arrival Sunday here in Melbourne, FL. Fine cherry character, almost jammy, tamped down by a slight petrol undertone. Light, yet acidic, mouthfeel, lingers for many minutes. Probably passed by this winery in McMinnville, OR during a visit years ago to see small boutique wineries and the spruce goose. Wished I had seen it, even though this is a multi-vineyard multi-appellation blend. Worth a spin, especially at the price, if you can get a bottle out of the 1100 cases produced. — 7 years ago

Conn Creek

Anthology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Conn Creek is a boutique winery on the Silverado Trail in the Rutherford district headed by winemaker Mike McGrath. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep red with aromas of currants and floral notes. On the palate juicy blackberry and raspberry flavors with espresso and tobacco tones with big well integrated tannins. Lingering finish ending with cedar and mineral ending. Will benefit from aging. — 7 years ago

9.1

This is one of the better pure CF based wines I had in recent years, coming from an Israeli Boutique winery, the wine is 95% CF and 5% CS. It has a deep garnet color, a truly amazing nose, herbal, with black cherries, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus and plums, full body, intense with chewy tannins, thick texture, rich with balancing acidity. A long never ending finish. Delicious! My score 91, drink to 2020. — 9 years ago

Beckham Estate Vineyard

Olivia's Pinot Noir Rose 2016

I had the opportunity to visit this small boutique winery today and I have to say, I am looking forward to what the future holds for them! Andrew is in the process of getting his estate biodynamic certified and he throws his own amphora pots to ferment his wines as he ferments and ages more and more in this non-traditional yet traditional method. This sort of intentionality is reflected in this rosè, as he reserves a section of his vineyard specifically for this bottling. Traditional Pinot funk, fresh peppercorn, picked watermelon and June strawberries recall a Provence-style rosè. Bright yet generous upon the entry, with fresh strawberries and cut blood orange greeting the palate, unfolding to early-season mango and ripe, orange pith, and finishing with Bing cherries, dried river stones, and acid for days. Balanced and thoughtful - just a rosè, but speaks well for the future of this winemaker. I look forward to seeing more from him! — 7 years ago

Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Delicate and fruity, but 14.5% sneaks up on you as you just keep pouring, and pouring and pouring ... You get the gist. Purchased at the Winery in Montelcino - and they had nothing left in April 2015, so if you can find 2010 anything from some of the more boutique wineries - buy some! Similar to Uccilera, which we love to! — 8 years ago

Wm. Harrison Vineyards & Winery (William Harrison)

Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Needs 3 years in bottle. Double decanted and was a nice dusty blackberry front, a little darker and floral in the middle. Finish is also quite floral, still rather acidic and lots of stiff oak tannin. Dusty and shale stone rich finish. Enjoyable classic Rutherford cab that doesn't try to be something it isn't. GREAT family owned boutique winery off the Silverado Trail. — 7 years ago

EMH

Black Cat Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Very nice effort. Fantastic boutique upon opening with plenty of bright red fruit, gentle oak and florals. Powerful gripping tannins that calmed down with decant. Touch of heat noticeable the first 1-2hrs but fades away. Really starts to hit stride with 5+hrs decant with darker more savory notes. Long finish. — 8 years ago
