All Muller Auslese have botrytis. Beautifully poised wine. So delicate and light but so delicious. — 8 years ago
Some background: Muller-Thurgau is a crossing between Riesling and Madeline Royale. It was once Germany's second most planted variety (as of @ 11 years ago). The variety suffered in status as the grape is easy to grow, and was often used in making plonk... but the Muller-Thurgau from Rainer Sauer is as elegant and mineral-driven as it is approachable.
On the nose, you get lime, sea spray and some grapefruit....which reflects on the palate. The wine also has a fine-grained beeswax-y texture, a tad like Chenin Blanc. Dry, with good lift and minerality. All in all, a terrific food wine. I paired this (with some hesitation) with Chorizo tacos from 4th St Market in Santa Ana, but man, did it go! I was worried about this wine not being able to handle the spice, but... beautiful pairing. It also went with their ceviche. All in all, quite good. 12% abv. — 9 years ago
