Orin Swift

Palermo Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A delightful wine with a heavy hit at 15.5 ABV. Full bodied and rich with plenty of character. While I am sure time will yield a more balanced wine, this selection is quite nice on the pop & pour. The nose yields sage, dried herbs, cedar, blackberries, plums, and spices. The palate is surprisingly smooth for such a bold wine with notes of tobacco, dark fruits & jam, fig, and balsamic. A delicious wine, indeed. — 8 years ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1957

So that happened again. Another relic from a bygone age. Unfamiliar vintage but hey why not?

Acidity high. Tonnes of secondary odors, a very dirty, dirty girl indeed. Mossy, damp, barn yardy goodness. Colour still decent, definitey a rusty tinge to it, much like the fender of the chevy Malibu robbing the 7-11 beside you now.

Dark cooked cherries, and a touch of oxidation. Meh. Original cork. Still rather fun. A touch of ferniness. Is that a word? Consumed @northforktable w toughchad dec 30/17

Alexana

Revana Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011

Beautiful ruby color. Not showing any brick quite yet. (2011 vintage consumed in June,2016)

Delightful nose that made me blurt out, "Ohh! Sweet sharp cherry funk!" That's a good sign.

It really has a muscular power on the nose that I'm really enjoying. The brooding dark fruit is laced with sandalwood and spice. With a little breathing time it takes on a slightly musky, cologne note sprinkled with earthy moist humus.

There's a little disconnect when you drink it though. It's not as bold as you might expect from the smell. Not to say that's a disappointment. Indeed, it makes it very approachable and dangerously easy to imbibe.

Texture is fine grit, body is balanced, and as my drinking buddy this evening said, it has that certain "je ne sais quoi."

I think this is really in its happy place right now. I can't imagine any more cellar time would improve the drinking experience. It might hold up a little longer but it's at maximum enjoyment potential in my opinion. Go ahead and pop this baby if you have any.

Domaine Leroy

Les Cazetiers Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 1949

Vintage 1949 in Burgundy according to Broadbent: “..most perfect end of a decade - elegant, well-balanced wines”; Clive Coates in his book Cote D'Or: "best vintage of 40's all-perfect beauty and purity”; Robert M. Parker Jr.: “it was the best of post world war II vintages before 1959”
Henri Leroy at that time was négociant based in Auxey-Duresses, his mythical daughter Lalou Bize-Leroy in 1949 was only seventeen.
Les Cazetiers is amongst the most elevated of Premier Cru site in Gevrey-Chambertin - and indeed the whole of Burgundy.
I drank this precious bottle on Mount Etna with #FrankCornelissen and other dear friends. Uncork this bottle lead to a surgical operation. Just begun to pull it out, a light breath of wine molecule with air bubbles magically have emerged on the surface of the cork. It's been like witness the passing away of a dying old man (or Pinot Noir must be a woman?) That humanized wine had held "élan vital", hope and breath inside him for the last 66 years! A miracle of a wine still so tasty, robust, citrusy, vibrant, earthy, incredibly alive and well-preserved despite color and neck level did not bode so well.. that's what I thought and I'll remember until I die: "the wine was waiting for us to drink it up, he gave off his mortal blow to offer us life, joy and smile!"

Bricco Boschis Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Color of dark purple with yellow and brown note on the rim. Nose is so beautifully fragrant. Peppery with nice dried strawberries, cherry jam, cedar wood, clove, rose, leather, and actually a touch of cola note. Taste is lighter than expected. Some cocoa note, long and profound balsamic vinegar note, cured meat, peppery, dried strawberries, cherry jam, and nice backbone of tannins. Aftertaste is medium long, with good solid tannins, balsamic vinegar note, some zesty note, and some more cola note. Very good Barolo indeed. — 8 years ago

Terre

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2009

TERRE winery (Italy)
BARBARESCO, 2009

Tasted January 2012

Was advised to buy Terre as perfect example of 'classic' Barbaresco. That was lucky purchase indeed: exciting, enveloping & powerful!
Promising appearance of intense dark bloody-red colour, violet rim.
Fantastic palette of fragrances: kaleidoscope of spices, dried cranberries, chokeberries and black currant leaves. Pleasantly high on acidity and tannins, in mouth reveals flavors of tart dark berries, dried tomatoes, rustic spices, earth. Persistent finish makes it nice company to lamb chops, bbq, truffles / porcini meals.
Not sure it's classic Barbaresco, but I do like it.

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc White Rhone Blend

Wine of the night for many, the facts: made from 80% Roussanne and 20% Grenache Blanc, from vines between 10-40 years old, and a small quantity of the “Vieilles Vignes” cuvee, produced entirely from Roussanne vines of at least 65 years of age. Deep gold in color, this is indeed in the mature stage. A complex and full nose showed layers of almonds, sea breeze, candied citrus and honeysuckle. The palate indeed confirmed the small bit of oxidized notes (sherry like saline) that went very well with the yellow fruits and flowers, full bodied with grace, minerality and good acid cut which no doubt is how it was able to age. — 12 years ago

C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España)

Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2009

Typical (as in excellent) GR Imperial nose, elegant red fruits, sauve oak, perfectly integrated. Mouthfeel is young and firm, yet what relents is a wonderful hint at the future of what this wine will give. Plenty to appreciate now but I think it will indeed only gain in complexity and only get better if you have the patience. A long, firm, persistently energizing and pleasant finish. — 10 years ago

Domaine Durand (Eric & Joel Durand)

Empreintes Cornas Syrah 2012

From taste: some butter and cocoa on entry, ripe dark berries, tapenade and lilac. Seems a quasi-modern take, plenty of fruit and tame. Dense and meaty palate, olive and fine acidity, creamy texture from wood, supple tannin. Tame indeed without losing its pure french syrah identity. Good concentration, and fine for the $47. A cornas to introduce folk to. — 10 years ago
