Drank in Adare Ireland at the end of a warm day of sightseeing. Perfect ending to the day. — 9 years ago

Connemara

Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Nose: peat! Smoky, toffee apple, a little saline. Round and spicy like a lighter island malt (Talisker-esque). Unmistakeable honey-caramel PS Irish backbone. Slightly odd pickle note late on the finish but otherwise better than a lot of scotches trying to do what it does.  — 9 years ago

Edmunds St. John

Durell Vineyard Syrah 1996

There's a hint of the unicorn in finding a couple random bottles of this, near its 20th birthday, in a wine store in Ireland. And this is drinking beautifully with notes of meat, olives, smoke and liquorice. There's great lift on the palate with good acidity and just a little dryness on the finish. It lingers with a classic campfire note. Entirely delicious. The 1996 — 9 years ago

Talisker

Talisker Storm Single Malt Scotch Whisky

My mouth feels like is on fire. Like a lightning bolt just scorched everything and left s smoky, salty, ashy, pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Scotland, Ireland, leprechaun, scotch bonnets, Jamaica. what? — 10 years ago

Owen Roe

Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir

Almost a dessert wine, the nose is of candied fruit with sweet pomegranate, plum and cherry and earth flavors. The label is of the ruins of a chapel in Ireland near where Owen Roe costumed the colors of the English Army in 1646. Very cool. — 9 years ago

Château Caronne Ste. Gemme

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1998

1998 Château Caronne Sainte-Gemme, Bordeaux, France, Haut-Médoc. 1 Jeroboam. Dinner at Newport House, Newport, Co. Mayo, Ireland. 8/29/15. Fantastic dinner with great friends. Black berries taste with a pepper finish. The Jeroboam size allowed sharing of several decanters with other guests.

Château Saint Esteve

Tradition Red Blend 2012

One of the little secrets about coming to Ireland is that there's tremendous access to amazing wine - Italian, Spanish, but mostly French.

Had this bottle twice this week in Westport, IE. It's a tremendous bottle of organic wine from the Cotes Du Rhone.

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2007

Has the usual chars of a 13.5% Rioja but wow, it has one hell of a long, smooth finish. €20 from Curious Wines in Ireland. — 12 years ago

Jameson

Crested Ten Blended Irish Whiskey

Spicy nose. More sherry than standard Jameson - fruitier and sweeter, which complements the pot still character, but I miss the balance of the classic stuff. If it ain't broke... Worth a try if you're in Ireland. — 9 years ago

Midleton Distillery

Redbreast Aged 12 Years Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Attention scotch lovers: if you love highlands scotch, this is Ireland's answer to the eastern side of the UK, a single pot still 12 year Irish whiskey! Nice spice, mellow smooth mouthfeel, maintaining the fruit body, and a woody smoke nose, overall, outstanding! Wish I could try the 15 and the expensive 21 year! — 9 years ago

Midleton Distillery

Redbreast 21 year Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Absolutely stunning. Devoid of many of the flavors that characterize most whiskies, like toffee, caramel and oak. On the nose, it's packed full of fresh orchard fruit up front - green apples and pears, pineapple, fruitcake, honey, crushed peanuts, orange blossom, cream. The body is rich and supple, stuffed with fresh fruits that caress the tongue with a fresh vanilla bean sweetness before offering a burst of tartness on the midpalate that lifts things into the stratosphere. That fructuous sour note hammers home the strong connection to crisp apples and freshly picked pears, and prevents this whiskey from coming across too rich and sweet. A hint of menthol, leather, and dried earth. Cardamom and clove dance on the palate with walnuts, violets and honeysuckle for the medium-long finish. Nice notes of barley at the tail end. Really special. — 9 years ago
