Fabre Montmayou Wines

Château Fabre Gasparets

Corbières-Boutenac Carignane 2017

High elevation-Single Vineyard Languedoc beauty. Lovely red cherry and spice aromas with hints of smoke and minerals. Dark cherry and black fruit flavors are complemented with Asian spices and Forrest Floor. Silky tannins and long finish. Exceptional balance. Revisited in December 2021. Still fantastic. Revisited again in December 2022. Aging gracefully! Beautiful wine. Thank You for this one, Kasey. — 3 years ago

Gran Reservado Mendoza Malbec 2013

Very smoky, delicious tar and oak, however maybe a bit too much for such a young wine. Has enough red fruit to see what that is like in a few years — 7 years ago

Lucien Michel

Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2010

With all due respect to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this is the original Donjon. Claire Fabre represents the third generation in charge at Le Vieux Donjon. Founded in 1966 by her grandfather Marcel Michel, and run by her parents Lucien and Marie José Michel from 1979 to 2008. Prior to taking the reins, Claire interned with Harlan Estate in Napa. Consulting oenologist Philippe Cambie also lends his services. Despite the Harlan/Cambie associations, Le Vieux Donjon is old school, through and through, and ascribes to the traditionalist principle of "one estate, one wine." The 2010 does not disappoint. While there's clearly a smoked mesquite overtone that permeates throughout and continuously, the plum, black cherry, kirsch, black olive, lavender, dried Provençal herbs, tar, and cured meat entangle thoroughly. The result is an incense that doesn't quit. — 7 years ago

Fabre Montmayou Wines

Reservado Mendoza Cabernet Franc 2019

This isn’t a Malbec. But if you’ve ever tasted a blockbuster Fabre-Montmayou Malbec, another great review and 95 points from Decanter, lobbed onto such a modestly priced wine shouldn’t be a big surprise.

And for everyone who hasn’t yet tasted an Hervé Fabre wine, let this dark purple, sun-warmed sweet raspberries and black cherries-infused Cabernet Franc be your introduction to one of the greatest winegrowers in Argentina.

Praised by the judges at the 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards for its “ripe nose with fresh red fruits and lively notes of green vegetables and capsicum,” this is the Fabre wine that walked off with a Gold Medal, and was recently featured by Eric Asimov of the New York Times as one of “20 Wines under $20 That Revive and Restore.” — Moore Brothers Wine Co.

Pharaoh Moans

Westside Red 2013

One more Central Coast Syrah. PharaohMoans is from a 3 acre estate on Paso Robles Westside (the Salinas River Valley splits the area into Eastside and Westside). Guillaume Fabre is the winemaker and previously spent time at L’Aventure. The wine is 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache. As Jeb Dunnuck noted in his barrel tasting, “If you're craving lightweight aromas and flavors, look elsewhere.” This is the liqueur version of chocolate covered cherries, and a crème de cassis, kirsch, and mocha head-spinner that packs a wallop. Secondary baking spices and sandalwood add some complexity. — 7 years ago

Panicaut Plan de Dieu Côtes du Rhône Villages Red Rhone Blend 2012

8.9

Deep garnet color with purple hue. Perfume, flower, leather, black pepper, red berry all come together beautifully on the nose. Warm and bright on the palate. The extra chili source like kick at the end might not be for everyone, but I love it. Tannic, and a bit puckery. A harmonized blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. This is one of the best value wine I've ever tasted. — 7 years ago
