Turbid, deeply concentrated, blue black core saturated to a thin garnet rim. Medium plus intensity of ripe fruit, fresh florals, and dried herbs. Black currant dominates with layers of lilac, green bell pepper, cocoa powder, toast, black pepper and graphite. A dry wine with medium plus body, smooth texture, medium acid, refined forward moving astringency, a touch o viscosity, well integrated high alcohol 13.5% throws no heat. Concentrated, mouth filling lilac perfume precedes a long lasting black currant, black pepper finish. Bitterness noted but low. A well balanced, complex wine although a little confusing with Syrah due to the color and concentration of black pepper that lingers on the finish. Classic Bordeaux aromas with ripe but balanced new world styling. — 10 years ago

This 2009 has an inky dark purple color and boasts an explosion of deeply layered fruits followed by vanilla, caramel, mineral and savory tobacco notes. It is full bodied and chewy, but silky at the same time. Big, but not overly extracted...super long finish. — 10 years ago

The deeply saturated ruby-red '98 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape 'les Hautes Brusquières Cuvée Spéciale' showed muted aromas of fig, leather, herbs and dark roast coffee. Some earthy terroir notes started to show on the chewy and lengthy finish. Definitely nearing the end of its prime drinking window, but still quite pleasant. — 11 years ago

This is the 2012. Nose has baking spice, dark minerality verging on smoke with wet earth and deeply sweet blackberries. Palate is full and rich with balanced acidity, a long finish, and just a bit of rusticity on the tannins. Somehow there's an elegance lurking under the chewiness. Might be from the cool climate or it might be the judicious use of oak. Either way, this wine has a freshness that sets off the brooding petite sirah nature really nicely.
