Zlatan

Crljenak Crljenak Kaštelanski

RIP to the late Zlatan who passed a month ago.

Zlatan Otok is one of my favourite wineries in Croatia. I appreciate every single one of the wines that I've tried but that said, this Zlatan Otok 2010 Crljenak is my absolute fave.

In 2001 a research, funded by Mike Grgich of Judgement of Paris fame, on the origin of Zinfandel came to fruition. It confirmed that Zinfandel and Primitivo came from Croatia. Unfortunately at the point of discovery, the vines of Crljenak in Croatia was near extinction. Today, only a handful of Croatian wineries still produce this wine. As far as I've tried, the Zlatan Otok 2010 Crljenak is the best representation of this variety.

Notes: Colour is dark garnet with some clarity. On the nose, I get cboth red and black fruit, white and black pepper, slightly perfumey like amber and musk. The palate reflects exactly what's on the nose, carried off by vibrant acidity and prominent minerality. Tannins are slightly coarse but sweet, which means it should be aged in the bottle for a while longer but ready to be enjoyed now. What I love most is how it opens up and expresses itself on the palate like a triangle--from narrow and shy to wide and lively. This Crljenak has lighter body than most Californian Zinfandel.

The final conclusion: Yes please! It's slightly cheaper than Lytton Springs, and I'm getting more pleasure from this.

Aberlour Distillery

A'Bunadh Oloroso Cask Single Malt Scotch

Nose: dark dried fruits a la plums, raisins, and dark cherries, pungent oloroso sherry molasses-esque sweetness, spiced honey and toasted caramel. Quite sharp at the cask strength 60.1%. A bit of water cuts the numbing sharpness, and brings out the dark fruit and honey elements as well as the musty (in a good way) oloroso sherry notes. A very distinct orange ginger coffee cake aroma emerged with the addition of water as well.
Mouthfeel/body: very full and silky, viscous. Good tingle at cask strength. Not quite as viscous after the addition of water (obviously), but maintains its body and silky character.
Palate: More dark cherries, raisins, spiced dried fruit, cinnamon, more pungent molasses oloroso notes. A bit of water cuts the numbing sharpness of the cask strength alcohol volume and opens up the dark dried fruits notes and pungent sherry notes, as well as more spice.
Conclusion: Great whisky with plenty complexity and character for the price. Tastes a bit young and spirit-y at cask strength but since I typically cut it with a tiny splash of water, this hasn't been much of an issue.

Sebastiani

Gravel Bed Sonoma County Red Blend 2012

Appearance: Clear, Deep red-violet
Nose: Clean, pronounced blackberry, black cherry, plum, strawberry, sweet oak, and mineral.
Palate: Dry, medium-plus acidity and tannin, full body. Flavors of blackberry, black cherry, black currant, blueberry pie, plum skins, black raspberry, minerality, most appropriate oak in the background and on the finish. Long finish.
Conclusion: Very good.
Commentary: Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. Big round multifaceted dark juicy fruits (plush), fruit forward without being jammy, excellent mouthfeel (grip). Very enjoyable now, and could age 3 years. Make it a multi-bottle purchase.

Pierre Brévin

Pouilly-Fumé Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Appearance: clear, pale, lemon; Nose: clean, medium intensity, capsicum, green beans, lime, smoke; Palate: dry, high acidity, medium-bodied, lime, powerful but smooth smokiness which creates medium (+) finish. Conclusion: good, great example of Pouilly Fume produced in Loire. Signature smokiness is not overpowering, yet integrates with the acidity and alcohol very well. One reason why it wasn't very good is the fact that it shows inferior existence of other flavours on the palate. — 12 years ago

Château Doisy-Daëne

Memento Mori

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

This feels like a well made wine. A really pleasing mineral/gravel note balances the deep fruits nicely. Continues to open over the 4 hours sampled. Tannins are relatively fine grained. Cocoa and crushed roasted almonds reverberate with the fruit at the conclusion. — 5 years ago

Château Fleur Cardinale

Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Bought in 2001 by Florence & Dominique Decoster. Ch Fleur was promoted to "Saint-Emilion Grand cru classé" in 2006. I did a vertical ‘12, ‘13 & ‘14, check my notes on ‘14 for conclusion. A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cab Franc and 5% Cab Sauvignon, deep red with big ripe fruit aromas and gentle notes of floral. Blue & Black berry flavors, great mouthfeel delivers nice balance on structured soft tannins that could benefit with more time, lingering finish ending with smoky mineral notes. Quinta das Tecedeiras

Flor das Tecedeiras Douro Touriga Nacional Blend 2013

Wow! Amazing wine! You won't miss the barrel on this beauty. As the fruit tannins are omnipresent. Spicy with red currant and caperberry playing alongside gooseberry, blackberry and boisenberry seamlessly. Your first thought is grape-y, but that would be an abecedarian conclusion. This is wine with depth, unlike pretenders in unoaked territory, and entirely satisfying in every sense! Brava! Abrigado! — 9 years ago

Tyrrell's Wines

Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon 2003

It went like down like this...
scott: what are you craving?
me: minerality!
[Scott brings blind wine]
me [after a few wrong guesses]: is it hunter valley semillon? Tyrrells vat 1 with some age?
[scott is impressed, I then admit I just had the 2005 2 days ago].

Conclusion: I am a slightly better blind taster than I thought. And the universe wants me to drink more semillon.

Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

certainly too young but instructive to try nonetheless. ruby with garnet edges showing some early age. medium intensity. deeply complex nose w roses, figs, dried cherries & cranberrries, clove, pepper, mushroom, truffle. palate dry w medium acid, tannins super high and intense. finish was medium in length, can detect some signs of excellence but overshadowed by tannins. conclusion very good and needs to age considerably longer. — 6 years ago

Sandhi Wines

Santa Barbara County Chardonnay 2014

Blind tasted. Nose is very tight; star fruit, green apple, hints of poolside vapors. First sip is intense, acidic and tight as well, a few chews revealing structure and contained complexity. A nice buttery and ripe fruit retro really shows the quality of the wine, in conclusion. Very hard to describe - a thinker - that's for sure. Still very young - a sleeper - that's no doubt, pleasure was partly intellectual. I'd recommend to carafe for half a day or to taste the bottle over a few days. Taste around 14 degrees. Rocche dell'Annunziata Barolo Nebbiolo 2009

Thought I'd update a few notes of wines from my Christmas list while sick in bed.

I've come to the conclusion, based on experimentation, that it takes 6 hours exactly to let a younger Barolo like this finally open up. Instead of herbaceous qualities, you get more fruit concentration and sweet cherry at the core, with beautiful rose water floral notes, game, subtle note of tar (though would show more in years to come) and a light touch of rosemary. The tannins were well integrated and softened by this point, leaving a wine that was powerfully balanced. This wine made a lovely duck pairing. 2009 will drink now, through 2027 easily.

Domaine Dupasquier
