Riofavara

Sciavè Eloro Nero d'Avola 2011

Wow! I'm heading back to Kermit Lynch to get more of this tasty vino next week. Wonderful black fruit nose with a cascade of secondary notes of licorice, tobacco, earth, and spice. Excellent fresh blackberry and blueberry fruit balanced by acid and tannin, making it a great pairing with tonight's dinner, a spicy pasta! — 9 years ago

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

1996 Ducru Beaucailou: Very dark ruby red, I guess this still would benefit from another 5-10 years (especially when comparing to something like the 10 year older Cheval Blanc). Still, an impressive cascade of exuberant dark cassis and menthol on the nose and surprising richness on the palate, this really is a 30 year wine. The tannins were maybe 90% resolved, but one had the impression of the wine still holding a little bit back. — 9 years ago

Gianni Brunelli

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

2010:
nose of black cherry, braised fennel to torn arugula, violets & incense
a core of focused juicy fruit is followed by a cascade of iron rich velvety tannins
was phenomenal w roasted truffle butter chicken and root vegetables

Bordeaux grapes make this a Bordeaux style wine, but the terroir of the Columbia River Valley make this fuller than most Bordeauxs -- lovely wine, indeed! — 10 years ago

Santenay Pinot Noir 1947

Notes of smoked Gouda, leather, wet soil. Perfectly ripe dark and red fruit and tannins so silky they make you want to cry. Intense smoke on the nose with a cascade of fruit, earth and thyme. Absolutely stunning. — 9 years ago

So rad. I'm partial to the sweeter fruit sours, as the sour-on-sour nature of this is a little relentless. The vanilla and orange aromas really pick up on the finish, and add an extra layer of complexity. Texture is creamy and full without being cloying and it's a necessary contrast to the barbaric intensity of the acid. Not for the faint of heart, but really rewarding. Continuing my thoughts that they have to be one of America's greatest sour ale producers. — 9 years ago
