Cakebread Cellars

Gundlach Bundschu

Mountain Cuvée Sonoma County Red Blend 2014

Gun Bun does it again. Always shocked with how great their wines are for the money. Wines I believe are still being made by Keith Emerson. Cakebread, Martin Ray alum and cohort of Phillipe Melka. With how long these wines have been around, I still consider them an insider’s find. Under $20 a bottle. — 6 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Big, jammy, and rich with some dark chocolate spice. Right in line with the other big Napa Cabs we love like Cakebread, Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel, etc. Ordered this at Sonoma. WBA — 7 years ago

Silice Pinot Noir 2013

This was drank on Feb 2017 with venison, pork porter house and grilled trout after sleigh ride to 10,000' and following great Cakebread Chardonnay. Full of dark berry, wonderful taste and dry. One best pinot's I have had. Will look for what is available. Highly recommended. — 7 years ago

Medici Ermete

Concerto Reggiano Lambrusco

Authentic Italian rambrusco. Light fluffy intake, beautiful mouthfeel, medium to medium plus acidity. I would venture to say that the tannicity is near perfect and the way the bubbles interact with my foreskin is divine. High quality producer but this bottle was clearly a siesta production. Bottled by a lonely Italian man with low T and a firm backhand. Pairs well with fresh cakebread and dip spit — 10 years ago

Mmm... What more can I say? Superfluous tannins may be initially discouraging, but they wonderfully compliment effervescent notes of honey and sour watermelon jolly ranchers. The nose is sluggish with goat meat. Medium plus acidity from a questionable producer. Others Ramblusco's oughten to follow the lead here.

This sparkling rambusco is a great addition to any gathering of friends or Italian midgets stuck in an elevator on the 57th floor of the Empire State Building. The full body yet light weight fizz give the almost necessary twist on diet dr. Pepper, taking you on a gaseous journey of solitude. Pairs magically with hot milk and goat cheese stuffed pig hooves. Producer quality is questionable.

Château du Grand Carretey

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2009

Was going to bring this to Tom and Caroline's for the barbaque... Brought a 2009 Cakebread Cab and one of my recent favorites a 2004 Bran Caia... The Bran Caia just ROCKS; 50% Sangiovese, 45% Merlot and 5% Cab... You barely recognize it to be Italian... It is yummy!!! — 11 years ago

Château Clément Saint-Jean Médoc 2012

The reviews on this are fascinating! After having the cakebread a few nights ago it is amazing how close these wines are. This is beautiful cherry and raspberry fruit with a hint of pepper and good tannin. I’m guessing that provenance of this wine is the key to difference of reviews or garagiste truly received something different in the bottle. Great qpr from my tasting. — 6 years ago

Needed a day or two to open up, extremely complex, incredible wine but very specific. Not as velvety as say a caymus or cakebread but still fantastic. — 7 years ago

Oakville Cabernet Franc 2010

Good wine in a great place right now! Great density. Tasted the 10, 11, and the 12 with Ms Cakebread in our recent trip. I think she was surprised we didn't like the 12. Parker gave this one a 93, which I shockingly agree with. I think this wine has incredible depth and density, but it was ready to go at pop and pour without any decanting needed. I don't think this is too age worthy, which is shocking given its AVA. FWIW, it seems Crocker&Starr and Paradigm Francs are just better "built." Still this is a indisputably good wine with great acidity, fruit core, tannin, and finish. More on Cellartracker. — 7 years ago
