God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache 2014

I haven’t tried this 2017 WWB wine of the year for more than a year. Needless to say, I was completely blown away with this stunner. The 2014 'God Only Knows' is an utterly fascinating wine from the amazing team of Christophe Baron and Elizabeth Bourcier of Cayuse Vineyards. This stunning Grenache was sourced from the Armada Vineyard and instantly impresses as it opens to intoxicating aromatics of red fruits, meat, tangerine rind, black forest cake, black truffle oil, and Earl Grey tea. This walks a tight rope between power and elegance, showcasing blackberry cobbler, and black plums with red raspberry preserves, red cherries and pomegranate seed. Beautifully balanced and structured this continues to impress with its gorgeous texture and poise. Flavors of blood orange, umami and black olive tapenade continue to add complexity and impressive range as they build on the finish. The combination of purity and precision are a thing of beauty. Overall, this is a complete success, and one of most impressive wines ever from Walla Walla. Outstanding now and also possesses lovely aging potential. Drink 2019- 2029-100 — 5 years ago

La Paciencia Vineyard Tempranillo 2012

Insanely good! Black cherries, black berries, scorched earth, charred meats and black tar. Also some notes of dried violets. Soft tannins. Silky mouth feel. This wine will undoubtedly benefit from a little cellar time, but it's very approachable now with a serious decant. I'm a big fan of these wines and of Elizabeth Bourcier. If this note is in your wheelhouse, do yourself a favor and source a few. You won't regret it. — 8 years ago

Sur Echalas Vineyard Grenache 2016

(Tasted on 7/30/18 with Christophe Baron at Cayuse)
The ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache is a stunning new bottling by superstar vigneron Christophe Baron and assistant vigneronne Elizabeth Bourcier. The head-turning bouquet entices with potpourri, wild strawberry, tobacco leaf, wet stone and shades of Umami with blood orange zest and charcuterie on this highly complex and satisfying nose. The palate is lithe and light on its feet, as the wine simply dazzles across the palate. The marvelous salinity produces gobs of mouth-watering acidity. Leather, tarragon, orange zest, red cherry candy and shades of guava puree with white truffle shavings all round out this highly gratifying palate. The range imparted in the wine is second to none. The texture to this wine is also absolutely gorgeous as the wine has a seamless quality that gracefully dances across the mid-palate. Monumental, profound and a delight to savor now, this ‘Sur Echalas’ Grenache up there with the best of its kind in North America. Drink 2019-2029- 99

La Paciencia Vineyard Grenache 2015

The La Paciencia Vineyard was planted over the course of three years, with three acres each planted to Grenache, Syrah and Tempranillo. The 2015 Grenache from this vineyard is one of the best red wines from Washington that I have sampled from this warm vintage. This incredible wine was aged in a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel prior to bottling. The nose is completely intoxicating with exotic aromatics of blood orange, wild strawberries, damp earth, guava purée, and peat moss tones with wild blackberry that all take shape in the glass. The palate shows an incredible range of flavors, which include blood orange zest, forest floor, white truffle, red currant jelly and umami. The wonderful combination of saline and savory characteristics makes your mouth water and completely captivates the senses. Despite coming from a warm vintage, the level of acidity that vigneronne, Elizabeth Bourcier, was able to capture is highly impressive. Thjs thrilling wine is beautiful to savor now but has another decade ahead of it. Drink 2019-2029- 97 — 4 years ago

Grenache Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Greg Ballington

Medium garnet red. Love the funk on the nose, reminds us of the GOK without the same intensity but tons of layers. Layered with crushed purple flowers, wet rocks, red berries, raspberries, a touch of olives, and leather. The Grenache really comes through after day one. Moderate tannins (6.5/10) and light body to start that beefed up to medium bodied the next day. Stronger flavors in the front and mid palate with savory notes, gaminess, cassis, red cherries, herbs and a touch of minerality. Super long and lingering finish. This is still a baby and needs air, we tried this over three days and after having a four hour decant on day one. Delicious inaugural vintage by Elizabeth Bourcier of Cayuse. Drink till 2024. Thanks Greg. Pretty much spot on with my impressions. Hope Elizabeth starts marketing on her own soon. This "no shipping to Illinois" is beginning to irk me.
