I had the pleasure of interviewing Ivo Jeramaz on my last visit to Napa Valley. He's the nephew of winemaking legend, Mike Grgich and has taken the lead in much of the wineries day-to-day operations along with Mike's daughter, Violet. Ivo is a quiet and thoughtful in his speech—and his wines seem to reflect this. The 2012 Merlot is carmine-hued, and is more transparent than most Merlot I've encountered from Napa Valley. It possesses a kind of quiet restraint and lovely finesse with nuanced aromas of red currant, pie cherries, dried herbs and underbrush intertwining fine tannins a tart acidity. 14.0% ABV | Sample

Brilliant garnet to purple color, carmine rim.
Expressive aromas of raspberry, cardamom, then vanilla, prunes, black currant, blackberry, wild vetch, cloves...
Very juicy berry-driven medium-bodied palate of perfect balance. Flavors of raspberry, black currant, cranberry, cherry, huckleberry, black gooseberry. Gentle oak touch.
Finishes persistently by juicy forest/garden berries with vanilla.

In 2006 Campari stopped using Carmine, a dye from crushed Cochineal beetles, to get their signature colour and started using artificial dyes. Nice to find a killer, natural alternative. Once you've had a Gran Negroni there is no turning back! — 10 years ago

Deep inky purple, dark carmine rim. Refined legs.
Constantly evolving nose: mulberry, saskatoon, sweet spices, black pepper, licorice, blueberry, black currant leaf, raspberry, flowers... chocolate.
Medium-plus body, well-structured and balanced. Mulberry, chokeberry, thorns, huckleberry, cocoa, raspberry, black cherry.
Lingering finish.

I get a kick out of Kramer Vineyards showcasing the hybrid Carmine grape, mated from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Merlot. This Rosé from a cold Oregon vintage is juicy, unexpectedly floral like a bit of Colombard snuck in (but it didn't), and a li'l spiced w earthy masala spices, especially whiffs of cinnamon. Lamb meatballs alfresco on the patio would be so nice! — 10 years ago

AJ 90/100 - Mi sono avvicinato a questo rosso con una "indigestione" di bollicine, ma non posso non apprezzarlo! Rosso granata tipico, fitto, naso con frutta in conserva, rosa, note di bosco, note salmastre, forse lievemente animale, può risultare sgraziato a chi non ama questo genere di aromi, in bocca potente ma fine, incredibile acidità e freschezza, finale infinito.
