Bepin De Eto

Domaine de la Combe

au Renard Beaune Pinot Noir 2003

JKT
8.9

Keep drinking through the stash, must be a couple more 2002s still. This one again had that metallic note from the time of purchase but muted and with a robust dark fruited profile. Still quite balanced. Two days later from Eto that original profile more prominent at Amahs CNY dinner 2/1/22. Dropping a point — 2 years ago

Anne Claude Leflaive

Clau de Nell Anjou Cabernet Franc 2012

JKT
9.0

Very nice balanced older Cab Franc. Very mature rather faded fruit laced with earthy notes that opened up. Good acidic texture and finish. Excellent with Amahs ribs and veggies. GL flash buy at 35. Next day even better after Eto and upping a point. Lively and fresh. 12ABV and biodynamic rescue of beaten down Anjou estate by Leflaive of Burgundy fame. Should have one left for a bit more aging — 3 years ago

Terrific old style Zin still lively and balanced earthiness and raisiny berries with long finish. Still great on day three in Eto. More prominent earthy and woody cigar notes in empty glass. Richer than Rossi — 3 years ago

Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2007

One of the last vintages with 10% cab in it and was real funky. Tasted disjointed and maybe needs air and a better pairing than taco night. Stuck it in the ETO and going to try again tomorrow. — 4 years ago

Brut Veneto Prosecco

Very dry prosecco. Ruhi liked it. I thought it was too dry. Nothing really wromg with it but would have liked it little fruitier. Perfect body though. Natures. Took 3 to goa — 4 years ago

Domaine A. Chopin et Fils

Les Essards Cote de Nuits Villages Pinot Noir 2008

Red cherries, mature red fruits and notes of barnyard hay and earth that dissipated over a day in Eto. Interesting opening indeed. Lithe and balanced, lively texture leading to a long good finish. Yum. 24 GL back in 2011, Prince in Pauper’s clothing indeed. Interesting back story of limestone quarry precluding proper AOC of these lands. — 4 years ago

Starfire Columbia Valley Red Blend 2006

Opened 10/10/19 good Bordeaux style blend with dark red fruits and a bit of earthiness in balance. Medium weight and firm texture but improve over two days in Eto. Seemed to have opened up with nice balance of fruit and that aged tertiary notes. — 5 years ago

Domaine Larue

Puligny-Montrachet Le Trezin Chardonnay 2006

JKT

Only bottle? Golden color and some oxidative notes but hasn’t crashed yet. Very ripe white fruits do come through and texture still firm and even a bit creamy with acids carrying through finish. Again with these maybe just over the hill oldies paired well with food (fish, leuffer squash and everything in pot soup). Held up well over next few days in Eto. Had three from GL for then splurge of 40/b — 3 years ago

Monticello Cellars

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1980

Another surprise of an unknown old style Cab. Might be first vintage of Jay Corley Monticello Vineyard in Oakville Knoll? Said to go for lighter style “dinner wine” which is on the mark. 12.5% ABV! Old school or what? Not just alive but lively and lovely with all that ripe prune fruits and earth and leather. held up very well in Eto over four days. Upping to 9.2. PS yes it is the first vintage of Monticello Vineyard and available as library wine on their site for $210! Shout out to Ira Schwartz's metaphor in his post on a '70 Mayacaymus Zin as pure joy of dancing with ones grandma, this one is like dancing with grandmother who trained as a ballerina and still has the style and posture! Amazement now laced with Heh heh value find satisfaction. AA14. — 3 years ago

Hope Well

Eola - Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2019

JKT
9.2

This is Sunday's Child. Opened 12/19/20 with MEL with the Monday and Tuesday Siblings. As previously CVed 3 weeks ago had good structure and dark berries with notes of earth and a bit of funk that's beguiling. Was more of a muscle man compared to Strings. But on 12/21 from Eto it was just delicious and waves of complex notes came forth. Excellent for aging — 3 years ago

Souverain

Sonoma County Pinot Noir 1974

JKT
9.3

Astonishing that this very old wine is drinking just great! The ‘74 Cab from Souverain was my very first early favorite way back then. Got this single sample and figured must be vinegar by now but be good for nostalgia for the long gone vineyard. Instead this is a delightful shock! Labels look great. Cork has top layer of crap but in good shape though the very bottom broke off. Wine has nice garnet color with little hint of its age. Still lively, well balanced and tasty even if not super complex. Nose is just straight out attractive with very ripe dark red fruits as background for the foreground earth and field and hay. No way I’d have guessed 46 year old Sonoma Pinot! Kept sniffing and satisfied even before tasting. Palate is light and lean but still lively and texture is firm and acidic carrying over to good finish. Like an aged but still athletic and elegant ballerina showing off. What a pleasant and memorable shock in these crazy times! Lot of 4 oldies from 70s, Sutter Home Zinfandels (2) Montevino and primarily for these but this Pinot already made it worthwhile for AA20. Adding two to 9.3 for the age! Back label says ‘74 was great vintage and wine ready to drink but will still be good in 3-4 years with proper storage. Ha! Day two still standing strong in Eto and dancing with delight. Enough for one last glass in day or two. Day three drank without food before dinner. Kept sniffing and sniffing. Elegant and complex nose with notes of sour plum and very ripe dark fruits. Only possible in such well aged vino! Memorable. Too bad only bottle. — 4 years ago

Very closed in the first hour or so through dinner but then opened up nicely. Red berries earth forest floor flowed into an acidic but lively and balanced palate and biting finish. Will see over next several days in Eto. Perhaps still need more time but already an excellent pairing for the ribs. 12.5 ABV. — 3 years ago

Poggio il Castellare

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

Very lovely. Well balanced. Tannins were nice and soft. Warm red fruits came off with some airtime and this was very pleasant to drink. Little rougher second day from ETO but still pretty good. Glad I waited on this bottle — 3 years ago

Clos du Moulin aux Moines

Aux Seurrets Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2014

JKT

Seems rather closed in both aroma and palate. Improved and opened up after an hour or two. Dinner at #25 and went well with pork dish. Notes of dark red fruits and firm texture. Perhaps in sleepy stage. Thought to contrast with Hope Well. On day three in Eto the nose opened up! Texture still good. Raise by one to 8.9. — 4 years ago

Dickerson Vineyard

Dickerson Vineyard Limited Reserve Zinfandel 1988

Very interesting old Zin nose of very ripe red fruits cherries and earth and stones. But kind of fall short on palate that’s more acidic. Medium finish. Went well with food. AA value 9. Two days later in Eto may be even better! Seemed to have opened up more and now there’s lively texture and lift and elegance. Surprising for 32 year old wine. Upping from 8.9 to 9.1. This vineyard revived for early Ravenswood Zin by Peterson. Dickerson died in Thailand sunami. — 4 years ago

Good new world style Zin but not overblown. 15ABV but not too hot on palate. Can taste the wood but reasonable. Long finish. Interesting nose of ripe berries currants and savory note (burnt salmon skin? From Leila). be great with meats. Only 300 cases or so. Two days later tasting even more balanced. First day under gas. Second in Eto. Working out great. — 5 years ago
