Beautiful and intense. Dried herbs, tomato vine, tart cherries, fresh raspberries, olive compote. From a small producer and terroir that invokes natural production and vinification. — 5 years ago
More fruit than occhipinti but still good — 6 years ago
Sweet delicious with gigs balsamic reduct and ricotta cheese. — 7 years ago
A little bigger and slightly smokies than an Occhipinti or Tami frappato, but still a beautifully restrained food wine. — 7 years ago
Spicy grassy and fruity — 8 years ago
Nice. I haven't had much history in Sicily...other than Occhipinti and watching The Godfather. Oddly enough, this bottle combined both. Delicious and dangerous. — 9 years ago
'10. Maldafrica was inspired by an early '80s visit by COS cofounder to Haut-Brion. A truly different 50-50 Cab-Merlot with the house style that crosses elegance with a good kind of rusticity. Giusto Occhipinti (above) was also a phenomenal host and the best kind of Bon Vivant. Seek him out, as the COS story is as inspirational as this very, very yummy and distinctive wine. Like Gulfi, making Sicily among the hotbeds of cool new wines in Europe. COS winemaker's tasting @noragrey. Kudos to Theo and Oenopole! — 9 years ago
Occhipinti triumphs again with a way-better-than-it-should-be-at-this-price killer Nero d'avola. — 10 years ago
@Delectable Wine this is Arianna by Spoto Wines... the wine entry needs to be modified. Dang. I've had a couple of torrontes, but this one blows them all out of the water. Nose of citrus and herbs. This wine begins with a very heavy, weighted mouthfeel. Dominant notes of lemon oil, lime creme brulee, herbal character and seems to get a little bit of limestone grit on the finish. Classic torrontes for the most part but on steroids (Silvaspoons Lodi) and with more of a weighted body and finish that resembles more of a chenin blanc. You wanna drink these now? Go ahead. Wanna keep them for five years? No sweat. Unfiltered. Originally ordered 3, then ordered a case, and now only have 7 total. Sigh... QPR this one is a 9.8! — 4 years ago
Funky, earthy barnyard with a just a hint of fruit. If you like this style, which I do, you will love this wine. — 6 years ago
Frappato and Nero d'avola still a perfect marriage. But in this one the oak was overpowering and out of balance. Either the oak's to new or it needs some more time. Eager to compare this to Grotte Alte by Arianna Occhipinti which is made just north, if it just wasn't sold out everywhere... — 7 years ago
Caramel, butterscotch, chocolate almonds, candied apricots, and candied red apples. Quite great for the price. — 7 years ago
7-8 months on the skins in amphora. Signed by Guisto Occhipinti. #italy #italia #skinferment — 9 years ago
Delicious! — 10 years ago
$26ish price point. Very easy drinking. Easy complexity, minimal fruit, mostly earth, spice, mineral notes without being an overpowering wine. — 5 years ago
Buono mercato. Value. Montepulciano sarebbe il mio favarito. Sarebbe meglio di SP 68 dal Occhipinti. — 7 years ago
Poppy strawberries with herbal notes of rosemary. Juicy with well integrated tannins. — 8 years ago
Nero d'Avola and Frappato in roughly equal measure aged in clay amphora. Cherry as the name indicates indeed, as well as strawberry immediately and currants with 2 or so hours of air. A lot of floral notes up front reminded me of Barolo, especially with the mineral notes and the silky, but firm tannins. This is the best wine in a while for me from Sicily not from Mt. Etna. I am looking forward to trying more from COS and Occhipinti who is the "O" in #COS. #sicily #frappato #cerasuolo #docg #amphora — 9 years ago
Arianna steered me back here as if I'd never had the wine before.
The nose is quiet, withdrawn. Shrimp shell and dried cherry and rosemary-- very 21st century Scandinavian.
Compact and dense in the mouth, with a bridge's substructure of elaborate acidity. More subtlety: yeast and tide pool, return of cherry. Sits and radiates.
