The smoke hasn’t cleared on this battle worn soldier. Really strong sense of gun powder! Volatilize, and peeks of lime pith or lemon verbena squeeze through the cracks like light in your lashes, revealing pepper and pecan shell, black mushroom spores and elm, with cigar sweetness and black lime on a smoky battlefield. Palate is lime pith and zest and oil and candied lime sparkles floating down a lemon juice river, with thick, thick lemon pith banks. Kind of a gangly age here, but showing depth and intensity. Need to see this one when it matures, sculpted like an Olympian.

This actually the Merlot version of the wine. Looks nice in the glass. Garnett. Smell of smoke and meats. Maybe chicken apple sausage. Also some slippery elm or licorice fern. Flavor is nice. Woodsy, complex with a streak of minerality. Nice balance with bite and grip. This is right in the pocket. Well constructed CA Merlot. — 3 years ago

Loveliest of mushroom-violet, saddle leather and fresh wool, dark legume, black olive, cool licorice notes and lavender. A graphite tip made of concentrated grape; a fig parchment carefully folded over smoke. Outstanding nose.
Tobacco flaking blackly over licks of flame, chicory, black licorice, cloves and black olives dance and darken to blackberry, charred elm and black pastry. Biomass folding in crystalline-spiked, smoky, charred cedar. Burnt cinnamon and peek-a-boo plum. Loamy and dense earth that encapsulates. Great wine to grow on!

Brilliant and red-amber come in at just-translucent showing slightly piebald broiled beef fat foam and eyebrow-expressive, graphic lacing. Woody, with elm and holly and cherry wood, blood orange and ruby grapefruit too, a peppery, meaty complexity. This beer really reminds me of some British ale that I can’t quite pinpoint. Nuttiness. Shelled pecans and dusty walnut, roasted hazelnut, and cigarette paper. Bitterness ion bits defining turn that smacks of savory, chestnut, dry cigar, weak coffee, cinnamon. Interesting twists here, and low fruit and malt reliance. .

Red amber glow inside mahogany. Off-white balsa crown of finest bubbles. Active, glistening, living bubbles shimmer-lacing. Planktonesque mesa-motif replete with angular minutiae bordering crystal frost. Cherry notes, hot dog bun, stony dust suggestions, Spanish moss on elm for the nostrils. Expectedly active mouthfeel shows less cherry, cola, cinnamon stick, dark flaky croissant, pepper, savory, and the slightest sarsaparilla and nutmeg if you can imagine a smooth assimilation of all of them, without any awkward protrusions, which means the loudest spices are all in check.

Only 175 cases made, this is a small outfit that works w/old vines primarily Zin & Petite Sirah. This was a 15.5% monster w/extraordinary concentration & stuffing. Tightly wound and reductive, this reminded me of some Clarendon Hills wines. Finally yielded a fairly impressive Zin profile, but that ALC was out of whack. Needs to sleep for 5 yrs or so — 4 years ago
