Sola Winery
Mendocino County Syrah

Pretty dark in the cup. Ink colored with a bit of red-purple in the light. Smells a bit more like cherry-berry syrup and vanilla caramels than fresh, funky forestal Syrah stuff. Still there’s a woodsy, hickory bacon element in the glass. Taste is heavy and deep. Bit of black licorice and some coffee beans. There is plenty-plenty tannin to chewy on. The oaky-vanilla bit really prevents the rest of the complexity from coming forward though. The mountain berries and herbs are lurking, but lost. It’s a drinkable Syrah, but not spectacular.

Color of dark ruby, a bit cloudy, and a bit brown and purple tone on the rim. Nose of wood chips, oak, strength of alcohol, spice, some smoky note, and a bit vague dark fruit. Taste is rather interesting with leafy black tea note, some cocoa, raisins, spice, juicy grapes, and low on tannins. A Syrah with interesting characters.
