I admit it, I drink a lot of Shiraz. I just love the variety. It’s got a great spectrum of flavours and Shiraz is fantastic for matching with food, in my opinion. Which is why I was excited to tuck into this sample bottle from Red Edge Wines in Heathcote recently.

The fruit for this 2015 Shiraz mostly comes from 15 year old non-irrigated vines. However there is some fruit in this wine which comes from vines which were planted back in 1971 too! The vines grow in ancient Cambrian red volcanic soils in southern Heathcote.

The wine undergoes 25% whole bunch fermentation and is crushed by foot. Following this the wine is matured in 2 year old French oak for nearly 2 years prior to bottling. It retails for $40 and can be bought online via the Red Edge Wines website.

Here’s what Mr Spittoon and I thought of this 4 year old Shiraz:

It’s a deep berry shade in the glass. It’s very aromatic with oak and spice coming through for me alongside a mixture of red and black berries. In the mouth it is dry but not overly tannic, it’s got a nice abundance of fruit and refreshing acidity. Think cherries and spice in the mouth. Very drinkable!

This wine was sent to me direct from the winery as a sample, I was under no obligation to post about it.

All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy.
