2012. Meatflowers and cherries and some oily herbs. Ripe, balanced, juicy, bbq wine.

Recommended for me by Todd Abrams at Elie. A little too fruit juicy. But good!

Today's #atlasofwine comes from the Alentejo region of Portugal. Dry Portuguese reds can be some of my favorites. This one is definitely on my short list of favorites for under $15 retail. Touriga Nacional and Syrah each bring so much character to this wine.

After years trying to taste it in a proper manner, I finally found the opportunity over a decent red pepper steak with red grape sauce. I was surprised not to see Alicante Bouschet into this baco original from the heights of the Serra de Sao Mamede in Portalegra, but the truth is that the typical granite soils from the region are powering this Touriga Nacional to its best!! Amazing quality price wine!

This interesting Portuguese blend is 60% Touriga Nacional, 38% Syrah, and 2% Viognier. It sees no oak to bring out the fruit. Deep purple color. Nose of freshly turned earth, wet leaves, and grilled meat. Soft tannins greet dense fruit flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry jam. Ending with smoke and mint.

Aromatic expression of viognier--orange peel, orange blossom--with some dark fruit and violet in there as well. Really fun stuff and supple indeed. Improved with decanting

High alcohol nose mixed with sea water, orange peel, earth and red fruits. Lots of herbs going on in here. Super soft mouth feel, this supple little lady is a looker. Fun and funky Touriga Nacional.
