Muted nose until about 30 mins in decanter when it started showing aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry and at 16 years a leathery note. On the palate there is sweet blackberry fruit and some aniseed notes Even though from a cooler vintage this is a muscular Wine. Perfect balance between the fruit and the oak with the Fruit gaining the ascendancy. Another 5 to 10 years of cellaring easily achievable.

Fun to open, little oxidation & the acid had tailed off, but the fruit was still young considering the cork was dry.

I have had quite a few tasting notes of this wine on Delectable over the years. An excellent Bin 28 from a good vintage showing Penfolds’s mastery of Barossa Shiraz. Chief Penfolds winemaker Peter Gago likes Bin 28 between 15 and 20 years of age. This is in the window at 16 years. 90% of the production is probably consumed before that window is reached. Out of the dozen I bought many years ago this is the 2nd last and the best so far. Definitely no Barossa fruit bomb showing stalky savoury notes. 2002 was a cooler slower ripening year. Excellent wine 96 points. Gago was right.!

Very sweet Berry fruit with a touch of anise and chocolate. I have read previously that you can tell the quality of a producer by the taste of their lesser Cuvees. If that's the case Penfolds delivers in spades here with their Kalimna Bin 28. Still a long way to go re cellaring.

Richer than the 2001 we had 2 days ago reflecting the better vintage. Great example of warm climate Shiraz showing Dark Chocolate and Liquorice notes. Amazing to think this was under $20 on release and will easily live for another 10 years. 17.5.
