Montalcour Rose Cotes du Rhone 2015

You know how sometimes you see a bottle in the store and you think: ya know what? That looks pretty good; and your fork over a few extra bucks more than you usually might in anticipating of Vino Goodness?

Maybe it’s the shape of the bottle, or the label that grabs your eyeballs...or maybe, it’s the backstory written on the back...and you take it home, you get it to the right temperature and then you uncork that baby...and swish, smell, sip, finish...and BLAH.

That’s when your subconscious self convinces you that you must have done something wrong. Maybe you swished it clockwise too much, maybe you didn’t give it enough time to “open up”. You REALLY WANT TO LIKE THIS WINE...but, sadly...

The 2015 Montalcour Rose from the Rhone is a Syrah and Grenache blend that is rusty/orange-pink and has a tart wild rasperry nose with barely a sniff of strawberry: the reason soon becomes clear.

It tastes like sour vinager. When my mouth overcame the puckering, my tongue was washed out. The finish was as acidic as you’d expect.

I wanted to love this wine. I love Cotes du Rhone reds, but this...I was disappointed. ALcohol was 13%, but tasted like 17. Maybe I got a bad bottle...but it didn’t smell corked: it just tasted BLAH.
