Beautiful color, does not seem 15 years old. Deep mix of garnet and ruby in the core with some brick on the edges. Lovely aged characteristics on the nose with notes of leather, a bit dirty, meaty, dark dried cocoa, blackberries, herbs, earthy, cigar box and olives. Love the nose. Medium tannins (6/10), so smooth and well integrated with a medium plus body. Solid acidity and Tons of layers on the palate, tobacco, cherries, leather and some earthiness. Dry and long finish. Drink till 2020. Strong 92..
From what I have found I believe this is made up of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot (first vintage with this much merlot), 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Fruit comes from Conca d’Oro in Panzano from Chianti. 2003 was a difficult vintage for La Massa, only producing around 35,000 bottles of their flagship compared to the usual 75,000. Aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, 10 of those are on the lees. Delicious bottling. Purchased through #WineBid for $45.00 compared to its average of $80.00.
