Domaine Zind Humbrecht
Roche Calcaire Gewürztraminer
Alsace, France

Fragrant, honeyed nose. Quite a bit of ginger, floral but not high toned; bruised flowers that are less fresh than caramelized. Actually smells like Sauternes, and the texture is similar. Dense and unctuous, but only a little sweet, the acid very much in balance. Resonating ginger spiciness, and vegetal, herbal bitterness on the palate and long finish. Complex. A lot more interesting intellectually than enjoyable for me at this point, but then again I don’t drink a lot of Gewürztraminer, so may have yet to acquire the taste.

All Gewurztraminer from Grand Cru sites was declassified this year, and those from 'calcaire' grounds went into this wine. It's a graceful, elegant wine, very good acidity. Completely dry. A wonderful aperitif on a hot day like this! Alas, it's pricetag of 33€ is a little too much, me thinks
