This was one Bordeaux’s classic vintage year and the 2005 collection will be memorable. This blend by wine maker Nicolas Thienpont is full bodied and excellent.

This wine from the Thienpont "stable" is unusual in that it's a "blend" of 100% Merlot. Indeed, the Thienpont clan has long been an ardent supporter of the Malbec grape. The wine has an amazingly deep, dark color, still nearby purple in spite of its being 10 years old. The nose is seductive with aromas of black truffles, forest floor, and a mixed bag of Provençal herbs. The palate is dynamic with great mineral tension and flavors of black fruits. The tannins are just a trifle dry in the finish. It's still a remarkable wine for this, the coldest growing area in Bordeaux. Kudos to the Thienponts.
