LONGING FOR THE SOUTH
Yesterday I drank this very nice Macedonian semi-dry T'ga za Jug red wine.
The wine is made of the native grape variety Vranec. It has an intense red color, and the distinctive taste of raisins and raspberries, which make it a nice sweet treat (hence: semi-dry).
The wine is named after the poem ‘Taga za Yug’ of the Bulgarian poet Konstantin Miladinov (1830–1862), one of the Miladinov brothers, who originate from Ottoman Macedonia. Both brothers are thought to have laid the foundation of the Macedonian literary tradition.
‘Taga za Yug’ means ‘longing for the South’ (el anhelo por el Sur): "If I had an eagle's wings, I would rise and fly on them to our shores, to our own parts [...] Here are frost and snow and ashes, blizzards and harsh winds abound [...] There the sunrise warms the soul".
When it is cold outside, and fiercely raining, I can assure you that it makes you long for the sun that warms the soul. Drinking the T'ga za Jug wine in good company and nice surroundings makes for a wonderful or sometimes even better alternative.

Medium Ruby. A wine from Montenegro and made by Bojan who was in our WSET Class! A step up in colour and intensity from the Stanusi. Earthy with notes of nutmeg and cloves. Palate is is dry with Medium+ Tannins and Alcohol. Full bodied with berry fruits and well judged toasty oak (turned out to be 1 year old American Oak). A very good wine with a long finish and cellaring potential. — 9 years ago
Interesting 50/50 Macedonian red blend of Vranec and Plavec. Jammy blueberry and blackberry fruit with notes of crushed rocks, cocoa and white flowers. Full bodied with polished tannins. A very pleasant surprise! — 7 years ago
Great fruit character. Complex, not flat or one dimensional. Remind me of the richness or cab, but less the weight. Enjoyed with steak and fries. — 8 years ago
My favorite wine from this vineyard. Richer than many reds from Macedonia and really loved this bottle. Paired nicely with wild game. — 9 years ago

Notes producer: Recognizable yellow-greenish, with complex and seductive aroma of exotic fruits, apple and peach, woven with tones of acacia flower. Long-lasting and tenable taste, glycerol-mild, with fruity and spicy nuances. — 9 years ago
Well made Vranec from Macedonia. This young producer will only get better with some time under his belt. — 10 years ago
Spicy deep flavours present here. Dark fruits. Great finish.

What a wine! Extraordinary deep purple color, great smell on plums and dark fruit, full-bodied, complex multi-layered taste, rather oaky (barrique) and wild, rough tannins, medium plus aftertaste. Powerful, rustical, wild. I like it! But it should be consumed with a rich meal. — 8 years ago
80% Rkatsiteli and 20% Vranec what else is there to say! Beautiful floral nose reminiscent of a muscoto. Dry Strawberry, vanilla finish! — 9 years ago
Great wine for the price — 9 years ago
Probably the best Vranec I've ever tasted. — 9 years ago

Aged for 24 months in new French and American oak barrels, a good wine, but for me to international style, personally to much oak on a cab sauv - nice try ! but I surely prefer and I'm convinced that Vranec is the most relevant grape for Macedonia — 10 years ago
