Certainly got my attention based on the “unique” factor. 100% Malbec that is vinified as a white wine. Practically looks like (clear) water. Aromas of lychee, cherry blossoms and watermelon. Flavors of red cherry, red apple skin, citrus fruit and a bit of vanilla. Distinct tart mineral note on the short finish. Crisp, bright and totally refreshing. Low alcohol (10.5%) very light bodied (almost watery texture). Medium-minus acidity. Best served on a hot day. Certainly a departure from prototypical Malbec. Very inexpensive. The 2020 Malbec Golden Reserve was 85% aged in one-fifth new barrels, the rest in foudres. The nose offers extremely clear notes of both ripe and fresh fruit, such as cherry and floral aromas, including violets. Having spent a year in the bottle, it’s firm with voluminous tannins. Silky but crisp with a nimble flow. The trick to achieving a profile like this in a warm year is the 8% dash of grapes from the 2021 harvest, even though the earlier year remains on the label (the law allows this up to a 15% share).
