Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2017

A replacement for the Pairing as a Marry Edwards regular bottle. Definitely sharper and less pronounced stone fruit, but nicely balanced and went well with all dinner courses. Bottles went too fast to see how they opened, so questionable still as a stand-alone (probably great); high marks for elevating the usual crisp white wine dishes. — 6 years ago

Smith Story

Thorn Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

Aged for 16 months in 25% new oak barrels, this wine displays all the right notes of that exposure and is not overblown. Only three barrels of this wine were made - some 60 barrels - and it hits 12.9% abv. It is praised as an elegant wine, the kind Pinot Noir lovers love to love. Medium dark, this medium weight wine shows a nose of cola, black tea, orange peel and spices. The palate is smooth and almost silky. The tannins are just enough and the acidity is perfect. Tart berries, tea notes and spice flavors all play in harmony. The wine is smooth without laying down, exciting without being boorish. — 6 years ago

Sonoma Valley Cabernet Franc 2015

Today was my annual hosting of the Wednesday Wine Committee. There was 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert, all provided by me. Tasted blind, as always.

I served this blind as the first red out of four in a flight of all cab francs. Every person in the room guessed Pinot based on color, and it’s hard to disagree. Certainly more translucent in color compared to most dark Cab francs. Chinon like and as far as the style of the wine itself, I think it’s also Chinon at its core with just a touch of new world flare. Not sure I’ve had such a floral cab franc. Lavender and rhubarb and the finish did a great job of requiring you to get another sip to analyze. Nice complexity. Nothing vegetal or green about this. One of the lightest cab francs I’ve had, and pairs well with lighter style meats.

Nash Mill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

Clearly more weight than the 2016 Helluva. 14%. Drinkable right now too. I don’t think these wines need to be aged. More purple than the Helluva. Quite rich and spicy. More CA in style. Mostly dark fruit. — 5 years ago

I’m not thrilled that you gave hs a higher score than the true believer. Typo? However, my team and I did grow the grapes for this wine, so I guess I would rather lose to my friend, Mr. From than someone else. I humbly concede.

Excellent tasting with Chris!

Ruby red core with medium garnet edges. Layered nose with violets, woody, roses, and dark red berries. Solid acidity, medium tannins (6/10), medium bodied and complex palate. Tons of spices, floral, dark red cherries, almost candied, dark spices, and a stoney finish. Long finish Made of 100% Grenache. Aged for 36 months in 30% new French oak and the rest in neutral oak. Majority of the fruit is from a warmer climate, more specifically Paso Robles. Goes for $60.00 at Vienna Vintners. Drink till 2024.

Smash City California Pinot Noir 2013

This is a monster (truck) pinot. 16.1% hooch. Tastes like spiced plum cake. It's pretty much unrecognizable as pinot but is still enjoyable. A bit of heat on the finish but not as much as you would expect. — 8 years ago

Nuts & Bolts California Syrah 2016

This is my second Herman Story wine. Normally, I’d sock my ‘16 Syrahs away for years, but I’ve seen reviews say this is so enjoyable young, so I decided to experiment. This is like rocket fuel...full throttle. BUT, it stops short of being out of balance/gloopy. These wines make me think this winemaker, named Russell, is like the Russell Bevan version of Paso Rhône varietals...big, bold, & delicious in style.

After only 30mins, this revealed some smoked meat, peppercorn, olive and underripe blackberry. Some sage as well. Massive on the palate...all sorts of dark, ripe fruit with a sweetened core. Bacon fat, roasted plum, and baked berry pie. This is hedonistic in style and not for the faint of heart, but it does a good job of restraining itself from where it could go. A fun wine.

@Shay A you are right on about Russell From. He is a big personality and fun to be around. He visited our home in 2010 on one of his ‘Casula Encounters’ tours. We had a blast! Yet to get to Paso but it is on our short list!

This wine poured like motor oil into the glass, and even stained the sides when swirling! The entry is a full throttle gingerbread spice cookie with plums and figs to the middle. Really wasn't getting much of a savory note at all in the first two-thirds of this wine The finish of this wine is just as dense as the front and middle. This is where some of the savory grilled meat characteristics showed, but it was just enough. More fruit, less funk. This one definitely has the structure to last 10 years.... but with it drinking this well, why wait? Great pull @Shay A
