Au Sommet

Western Vaca Mtn. Range Cabernet Sauvignon

Wow an amazing find at the Woodlands. Outside of Houston Texas. Crush is a wine bar that knows and is a big fan of one of my favorite wine makers Heidi Barrett. This was the best selection tonight of Dominus 2012, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, and Silver Oak 2007 Library release... all exceptional full bodied wines. If ever an opportunity to procure a bottle of the ever so silky smooth fruit forward Au Sommet please go for it. Incredibly complex blend of subtle flavor. This is a siping wine that needs to be appreciated with the most special people in your world. Obviously this is well paired with duck prepared as the French would suggest. My highest Regards to Heidi for conceiving this wine. — 7 years ago

Bending Branch Winery

Texas Tannat 2010

2010 vintage that is drinking really well. Dark fruit, leather, pepper with the robust tannic finish you expect from Tannat. Proof this varietal is a hit in Texas and that you shouldn't be afraid to try a lone star state bottle — 9 years ago

Granadilla on the back palate

Duchman Family Winery

Bayer Family Vineyard Tempranillo 2011

This dark Tempranillo smells like a meeting of Rioja and the Lone Star State. Huge whiffs of blackberry and blueberry are laced with some good ol' Texas dust. Earth plays a big supporting role, with oak pulling up in third place. A little bit of vanilla, a little bit of clove and a lot of leather are in its aromatic saddlebag. The wine's earthiness comes through even bigger on the palate, where it rivals those dark berries. — 10 years ago

Nice

Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

I was able to have a good conversation with Justin (one of the wine guys) at Central Market as he poured me the rest of the Silver Oak, and he was gracious enough to open up the floor for recommendations on what their next higher-end wine should be to serve BTG at cost. In the meantime, however, he opened up this bad boy and man...what a treat. The winemakers for Nice are (from what I’ve heard and read) some pretty solid dudes and it was neat to see that they’re headquartered right here in Houston. Below is an excerpt taken directly from their site as a means of education to satisfy all of the wine nerds out there (myself included):

“Winemaker and Foodie superduo Ryan Levy and Ian Eastveld of Nice Winery are Certified Sommeliers, wine educators, and Le Cordon Bleu trained chefs. Their hand crafted, boutique wines are poured in top restaurants and have won gold medals in internationally recognized wine competitions. Ryan and Ian have built their epicurean pedigree while studying in Paris, France, directing culinary education for Viking, teaching cuisine to thousands of students at Central Market, and operating their restaurant and catering companies, Republic and Nuance. They make their wines from estate vineyards in Texas, Argentina, and California.”

Château La Vivonne

Les Puechs Côtes de Provence Mourvedre 2016

I know I'm giving a Provence a 94 pt rating..but this is truly one of the most balanced, elegant, refreshing, and well rounded rosés I've ever had. Made by Château La Vivonne, of whom I've only experienced their Bandol rosés, but this the best by far. The nose is lifted, floral, and invigorating, and the color is star bright, a perfect hue of pale salmon. The pallet is structured with finesse and focus, with an acidity that is soft, and bright at the same time. Think - cotton candy, wildflower, and lemon oil on the nose, and juicy Meyer lemon, raspberry, and white pepper on the pallet with a light grapefruit finish. Nothing is angular, everything is in beautiful flow. Stunning.. This is my new drink of spring! (While it rarely lasts in Texas)

If you're good with dough and make a mean pizza, try this with a Napolitano style pizza with spinach, Mozz, Asiago, Grand Padano, garlic, olive oil, and a squeeze of Almafi Coast Lemon (Meyer works as well)..it was the perfect recipe for a great Sunday brunch.

$16.99 - try it!

Brazos

Texas Style Gin

Wow. This is an American gin that can stand with my English favorite, No. 3. This is a real gin, not the slightly-flavored vodkas masquerading as gin that you find in most market labels. The bold presence of spices - juniper, cardamom, black pepper - blends really well with the fruit elements, mostly grapefruit. An all-star. — 10 years ago

Star of Texas Winery

Texian Red 2016

This dry red wine is a deep ruby color with moderate acidity and firm but soft ripe tannins. Intense aromatics of black cherry and ripe plum will continue to develop as this wine ages. 100% Montepulciano from the Texas High Plains AVA. — 7 years ago

Getariako Txakolina Hondarrabi Zuri 2016

Mmm nothing like some delish Txakoli on an abnormally hot day in October in Texas. Signature high acid, lovely aromatics of key lime, peach skin, and minerals. Refreshing as all get out, I love the slight fizzante and slightly off-dry mineral-laden finish. This should be a go-to no matter where you are, especially if you find yourself in the lone star state. — 8 years ago

Wonderful #TexasTempranillo we thoroughly enjoyed this smooth drinker with some venison tacos. This had a bit of spice on the front with a nice finish that reminds one of smokey cherries and a bit of love for the Lone Star State. — 9 years ago
