A bout between 2013 Washington Syrahs for a New Years celebration. K Vintners Motor City Kitty vs Gramercy Forgotten Hills. When comparing these two, I can't help but think of the show Stranger Things. These two wines are parallel universes, and it starts with the color. The MCK is a dark, deep purple, while he FH is medium purple. On the nose, the MCK gives dark red fruit and a dirty, spicy note as if you just went out to the garden and picked a jalapeño, some cilantro, celery and grabbed a handful of black raspberry and a plum and rubbed them all in your hand. The FH on the other hand is fresh and vibrant with red fruit, cured meats and savory herbs. On the palate, MCK has pruney raspberry, plum skin, with pepper and earth greenness. The FH has bright red fruits - strawberries, raspberries wrapped in plum skin with a dash of pepper and tar - with medium plus acid and great grip. Depending on you mood or palate, if you're in a mood for a dark, dirty Syrah go for the MCK, and a bright fresher Syrah for FH. Both great! — 7 years ago

The wine first hits the tongue with strong hints of tree bark and whimsy. Full-bodied and velvety, like the tongue of a mysterious stranger. It dances through your mouth like the moonbeams on a greek beach. It trips down your throat like the thrum of a Spanish guitar. — 8 years ago

2011. Interesting this. Trying to hard to be fruity, but ultimately cannot escape the dominant vortex of Gruner's savory side. Definitely ripe at 14.5%, the wine is almost completely botrytis free. Pure, ripe green citrus (kefir, yuzu) as well as a steady tempo mid-line of ripe yellow and green apple, on the fringes lurk stranger tropical notes: pineapple rind, kiwi skin, green banana and green mango. There's that radish-and-lentil savoriness, shiso, fresh basil, tarragon. Chinese five spice chimes in (maybe the botrytis?) and pleasant Asprin-like bitterness on the back palate. There's an additional chemical note (SO2-related?) that reminds me of riesling's petrol, but it's really more like if someone had tried to turn the flavor of municipal pool water into a food, like a not unappealing chlorine snack. I know that's really weird, but it's what it made me think of...big without being baroque, and kept together by the acid and bitterness. Not a shy wine. The ambition and quality are obvious, but it's not harmonious at the moment. — 9 years ago

This wine is stunning, in the same way that encountering a beautiful stranger can take your breath away. The nose draws you in with subtle layers of dried flowers, anise, Italian plum, forest floor and juniper berries. This rich, complex tapestry continues on the palate, the texture every bit as elegant as the nose. Polished tannins and structure that could easily carry it another 20 years in the cellar, but still fresh and vibrant today. Crushed stone, dried herbs and bay leaf. Dark fruit Leather funkiness. Great acidic pop throughout (though I'm getting a phantom-like petillant effect). In some ways reminded me of a stranger la Rioja Alta Gran Reserva Rioja...

Beautifully extracted like a N. California Syrah, but as light on its feet as a mature Hermitage. Stranger still, the sour cherry Sangio nose of a Super-Tuscan.
