Navarre. A region in northern Spain bordering Basque, La Rioja and Aragon. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit. This wine brings me there. Let me tell you about the 2010 Otazu Premium Cuvee Senorio de Otazu. I want to break it down quickly and then opine on the wine specifically.
VISUAL: Clear, ruby on the edges fading to dark twilight deeper in.
NOSE: Slight cherry apple without O2, after a few swirls it opens up to sweet strawberry and banana scent. Very nice, not overpowering or too fruit forward.
PALATE: There’s oak in there, but only slight. Chocolate, barbecue, cherry, pistachio (barely). This is a wine that is sleek and sexy without being too obvious. It’s that girl at the beach who has no idea how beautiful she is, and just wants to throw the frisbee. The wine is NOT a tease, it’s just sweet, beautiful and very cool.
FINISH: No acidity, smooth finish with just a hint of tannins. It finishes without excessive echo.
AND NOW LET ME OPINE: I love this wine. It’s a perfect example of a quality Spanish wine: 50% Can Sauv, 30% Tempranillo, 20% Merlot. It’s a fantastic wine that I could see enjoying with a spicy curry, or even just on it’s own. Grab a bottle of this, a good frisbee disc and head out to the nearest beach for a game of Ultimate Frisbee. You will not be disappointed. My Parker Rating for this is a solid 90 points. — 9 years ago
Needs to open up. Excellent. Total wine. With steak teriyaki. — 11 years ago
On the nose, copious prune and raisin, underscored by a pleasant nuttiness, culminating in a distinct sherry aroma. On the tongue, juicy and full. The prune follows through, along with a nice black cherry, all of which is mellowed out by stout, toasty oak. The finish is med-long, warm, and very smooth. Fantastic for $10.00. — 11 years ago
The first night I pulled it open, it was completely unremarkable. I was using it for a coq au vin. Purchased at GO for $5.99. After leaving it open on the counter for another day, it developed lots of plummy, raisiny and fruity notes. Nice color. Great for the frugal and patient. — 7 years ago
