Meao Tawny NV (1999 stock)
From stocks that Francisco is experimenting with, these Tawny wines may or may not turn into a commercial bottling. From what I gather with discussing it with Luisa they are still tinkering with the blend and the style they want to represent as a Meao Tawny.
Caramel and roasted nuts jump from the glass and fan out over the thicker textured wine that adds oxidized notes of orange and ginger. If anything for me as good as this is it could use a little more freshness.
Tasted at Quinta do Vale Meao 10/16/2015.

Starting a love affair with vinho verde. All the underripe granny smith and lime zest. Hell yes. — 11 years ago
Very good. Deep, long finish. Portuguese. Perfect with steak! — 12 years ago
Belo exemplar maduro do Douro! — 12 years ago
What a value. Nose of leather and dark fruits with spice. Awesome density on the palate with a great fruity finish and an earthy attack. It’s a bit like a port that isn’t sweet. — 7 years ago
A cooler vintage in the Douro. And for the first time, stems were used during fermentation has created and strict and aromatic version combining rich red berries with spice with and crushed stone flavours. Still tight but showing great promise. 94 p. — 8 years ago
Lovely aroma of red berries, lingonberry and a little oak. Smooth flavor and a really good wine for mingling as well as with food. — 9 years ago
Extremely rare, not sold in the USA but available at the Quinta to taste and take with you. 100% Touriga Nacional from both schist and granite, the combination of both soil types adds power, structure, freshness and complexity from the schist, while the granite rounds out the wine with more body, deeper fruit and plush tannins. Well structured and balanced, this is an elegant version of TN that will please traditional Douro wine consumers, as well as those that appreciate precision and elegance matched with power and grace. We were able to taste the 2014 individual parcels that allowed us to see the components that each soil type bring to the wine. This should go 95+ as it ages, it sure has the potential to do so.

Estate old vineyards over 40 varieties blended or mixed throughout the plots. Nice, soft some spice. Sold out of 2011 which was a great year. Look for this. — 10 years ago

Portuguese red blend. American oak. Delish. — 12 years ago
The Portuguese are teaching me at least that blending many vines with passion can produce exquisite experiences: refined, good body, smooth Ramon’s for a young wine, robust color l, varying aromas-really changing constantly!!! — 8 years ago
This was a bit of a gamble, but it paid off. If you find the 2006 vintage for a decent price (anything under €15, I would say), then go for it. Decant well ahead of time, at least two hours. — 8 years ago
Apparently this wine was significantly better than last time. Very awesome. — 9 years ago
Dense, complex with a great macadamia nut notes at the core of dense black and blue fruit with a firm perfume coming through. Spicy black fruit with taught tannins, needs plenty of time in the cellar. — 9 years ago
Young tasting - fresh. Very fruity. — 9 years ago

Kind of like if Grenache was grown in Bordeaux. About to go great with some steaks. Thanks @garagiste! — 10 years ago
Capa alta y densidad alta, nariz potente naranja alcohólica , notas frutos secos y fruta negra en compota . En boca buena entrada , buen peso y final riquísimo. — 10 years ago
Doesn't get much better than this. Gemstone ruby hue with a tawny ring. Attractive nose, but the palate is just magnificent. Orange and spices underpinned by tar. Endless finish. I shy from giving it a 10 only because I consider it to be "life affirming" rather than "life changing." Like drinking time itself. Amazingly, it could probably age another decade or so with ease. Sheer brilliance. Bravo! — 10 years ago
Dark ruby red core with red edges. Beautiful nose, medium to full bodied, elegant red fruits, cherry, sauve tannins, with good acidity, long and persistent vintage. Classy wine. — 12 years ago

the nose is bursting with green herbs, musky florals and tobacco ~ the fruit is super intense on the mid-palate surrounded by plush and dense tannins ~ youthfully on point with many years to go... — 7 years ago
