Proper Wines

E. Guigal

Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2001

Dark with ageing only evident at the edges. Lovely line of acidity giving a long mid-palate of blackcurrant and forest floor. Drinking nicely, but could has plenty of years ahead. Nice, proper wine. — 5 years ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Very nice but perhaps a bit over the hill - from half bottle. Truly classic as expected with lots of deep leather, dusty dark red fruit, cassis, and refined tannins. Good acid that does hold things together nicely. Nothing like a good Bordeaux to ring in proper wine season. — 7 years ago

Domaine Leroy

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2010

Roel van der Burg
9.1

Just out of the bottle this was a bit 'big'. It screamed exotic fruits; a bit too much to my taste. The palate was not that heavy, so it felt slightly out of balance. I missed (hoped for) minerality/citrus (tension?) too. Left half the bottle for the next day. The 'bigness' was gone and on the palate it gained weight (in a nice acidic way). Will def. benefit from proper decanting or longer aging. Made by Lalou Bize-Leroy 'in the vineyard'. They don't have a winemaker on the payroll. Great quality Bourgogne Blanc, made out of declassified Meursault, Puligny and Savigny fruit. But at this pricelevel there is serious competition around the corner... — 10 years ago

Koehler-Ruprecht

Kabinett trocken Pinot Noir 2015

I have never really taken the time to explore the wines of Germany. In fact, I have more experience drinking the wines further to the south, in Austria. I have no proper excuse other than to say that I have been distracted by other regions. Bottles like this are making that excuse harder to accept. This was flat out awesome. Koehler-Ruprecht is a very traditional producer that practices a very strict, non-interventionist approach. No irrigation. No fertilizer. No herbicides. No enzymes. Nothing added or subtracted from the wine save for minuscule amounts of sulphur post fermentation and prior to bottling. This Pinot Noir is gorgeous, in a slightly more rustic sense. The appearance is a touch cloudy but far from murky. There’s a fresh, beautiful, lifted perfume of crushed strawberries, cranberries and ferrous minerals. Some stone, flowers and dust too. The palate is bright and racy with predominately red fruits and minerals. Fine tannins. The acid provides a long finish that forces a smile. There is some real vigor in this! A truly compelling wine. If I don’t make a better effort to spend the time exploring the great wine producers in Germany, well then, shame on me. — 6 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc White Rhone Blend 2012

My first white Beaucastel and my first white proper Rhône. Light golden. Rich, unctuous. I get the dried fruit and fruit skins. Hard overall for me to describe. Too much going on and I don’t have the words for it. Loved it overall. — 7 years ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2007

Served at the proper temperature and allowed to breathe, this wine delivered rich plum and black berry fruit flavors with an undercurrent of earthiness. Wonderful expression of the Sangiovese grape. — 7 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Red Rhône Blend 2013

I knew what was coming. Consistent with other recent reviews, this one's tightly coiled, zesty, fruity (for a CDR) and bright. And I gave it an hour long proper decant. Enjoyable as a daily tipple but needs time to develop depth. — 8 years ago

Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Meursault-Charmes 1er Cru Chardonnay 2004

Château Palmer

Alter Ego Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

12th bottle of this beauty we can't stop drinking as so good young! @£50 - reviewed before & was a quick bottle last night so I think what I said before captures it well 😁

A proper good Margaux! Dark plummy blackened red. Aroma of plum, blackcurrant & wet stones. Thick intensive balanced smooth jammy blackcurrant, cocoa & plums on palate with med body. Long back fruit finish with little acidity.

Mrs E suggested it's like "bare breasted maidens under a blackberry waterfall!" Who am I to argue 😎😍
