Opened a couple of hours before service. The 2001 “Rabaja” pours a garnet color with a translucent core and fairly significant rim variation; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears and significant sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated, red fruit: Morello cherry, dried red flowers, truffle, old leather bound books, a mix of organic and inorganic earth and a pleasant blend of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose where there’s a bit of a Maillard reaction with the fruit showing a touch more stewed. The finish is medium+. Drink now after a couple hours in the decanter but should drink well through 2031. — 4 months ago

Fantastic! A quintessential barbaresco where subtlety outshines power. Rose, earth, spice, dark but not heavy fruit. If this isn’t its prime, I can’t imagine it’s better. — 10 months ago
17•+ remarkably young colour. Good nose, though not v complex. Same on palate - v good fruit, elegant but not as interesting as I’d expected. Maybe decant next bottle. — 6 years ago
Very lovely warm and colourful bouquet and clean finish — 9 years ago
Some of the happiness may indeed be because I've been a little to Californian lately. Occupational hazard. This has got pretty violet aromas mixed with herbal notes of pine and faint rosemary. Palate reflects aromas, adding dried cranberries, leather and tobacco notes. Good tannic grip. — 12 years ago
Slow wine tasting 🇮🇹 wow, light but full — 3 months ago
Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of dinner. The 2021 pours a pale garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Morello cherry, raspberries, red flowers, tar, dried green herbs and gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. One of the better bargains in the world of wine. Drink now through 2041. — 5 months ago

Here is a confession! I try very hard to quit delectable and give it up: But then the wines come along with a personal connection. I visited Silvio in the early 2000‘s and we tried his 2003. Great wine in a hot vintage. His son was born 2003. Ever since i have a soft spot for his wines. # This one is quite spectacular. Drink now it is f….great or keep for 10 years +. Classic. Sold out at Kermit Lynch. I bought just one bottle. 😢 Enough said. — 8 months ago

A m a z I n g. Fine furry tannins straight away so we decanted. One hour later this was singing. The nose was so pretty with cacao powder, faint sweet tarragon, and strawberries. Mouth coating raspberry fruit roll ups, smooth tannins makes this beautiful. TBL — 5 years ago

Aroma had black currants, blackberries, shoe box, tobacco, leather and dates. Over the palate came black currants, leather, green tannins, tobacco, shoe box, herbs, oak and a hint of vanilla. High acidity, high tannins and dry.
Dark ruby red. Concentrated, fruity and elegant. Cherry, blackberry, leather and cedar. — 5 months ago

Drank as 2nd bottle with Ryan and Elissa. Wonderful meal. — a year ago
Beautiful rust color. Earthy, dry, subtle notes of stewed cherry, dirt, cocoa powder, pomegranate, & subtle coffee. More fruit forward than I remember. Dry, tannic finish. Medium acidity. — 7 years ago
One of my favorites! Velvety fruit of black cherry, with edges of wild mint and herbs and a leathery quality that is just beginning to show. This is Rabaja fruit through and through. So decadent and rich with gentle tannin (gentle for Nebbiolo, that is). — 11 years ago
Day 2 of Santo Stefano...still plenty of tannin, but coming around so nicely! Santo Stefano is incredible... — 13 years ago
