Flashed chocolate, and some primary fruits before subsiding into a meaty mushroom earthy cloud of deliciousness with that lovely combo of integrated oak and dark prune minerality. Great time to drink this. — 10 years ago
Ripe red fruit. Healthy showing of spice and tobacco. Silky mouthfeel, lifted weight. Clean acid. Drinking well, however still primary with glimpses of depth and age. Excited to watch this go for the long haul. — 11 years ago
Wonderfully enjoyable wine. Seemed very well advanced for such a young pup. Round and balanced with all the right primary fruit aromas layered with developed earth and coffee notes. — 11 years ago
Dark cherry, "sweet" dirt, black raisin, dried mushroom, dried jerky, hoisin. Admittedly, the flavors were all over the place, but regardless a very complex wine where the primary fruit flavors are evolving into secondary and tertiary ones. — 10 years ago
Every time I open a bottle of this (and I've kept my eye on it for a decade now) I think it's flawed. It just retains this dumb tannic hold for the first day after opening it. So I sucked the air out of it and kept it in the cabinet for 72 hours. Now it tastes great! Not a lot of primary fruit left but a seriously delicious musty blackcurrent compote. If the secondary berries that seem to be poking their buds through the soil now develop as I hope they will over the next two decades, this will be a very nicely integrated, balanced, and textured wine. It'll be fun to find out! — 10 years ago

So tightly wound, still lots of oak and primary fruits! — 11 years ago

1999. Another fantastic bottle of Chave. Still primary but hard to complain. Try again in 3-5 years. — 10 years ago
