Deep, opulent pink reminiscent of a Tafel rosé. At 14.1%abv it's assertive and wonderfully balanced. Citrus peel, watermelon, red berry and meaty aromas and flavors, this is on the upper side of medium bodied. It's a serious wine that would be as welcome with a steak as with grilled shrimp or later. In 2017 the wine is 49% mourvedre, 39% grenache and 12% counoise. Delicious — 7 years ago
I’m in St Emilion and everything tastes good but this is pretty spectacular. Spicy and tight but not brutalizing my tongue. The nose is that perfect combo of leather with dried fruit. Could use a few years. Like another 4-5. Tastes like a 49 euro wine so if you can get the 14/15s for less that $40 I’d jump on it. Pre game for our dinner at the local hot spot down the street. — 7 years ago

Informal gathering to drink some Bordeaux varietal bottles with steak.
1986 Cheval Blanc: This one showed suspect ullage, to the point where it had been hard to flip it. And in the end, it did turn out to be a controversial wine--was the orgasm 40 days, or was it 36 days? Hard to say... An extraordinary wine, classic in its own way, with fragrant dark flower and black cassis aromas wafting from the glass, and maybe more importantly for us, exploding in the mouth. Some of the more ordinary adjectives, like "smooth" and "balanced", are accurate enough, but obviously don't do this one justice. One could do a fluid dynamical description of the time evolution of this wine in the mouth, a broad attack that gave way in about 3 seconds to a sensation of acceleration and flaring across the entire breadth of the palate as the wine detonated, an oenological version of a jet... And then a persistent finish where the inner mouth perfume resonates as it fades slowly (or simply moved off to some parallel universe). — 10 years ago

Tasted blind. From a bottle that I’m told had a top shoulder fill. Reddish tawny color, translucent but with intensity. Port-like nose with notes of black cherries, plum, tan spices, molasses/brown sugar and some cranberry. Earthy and ethereal in the mouth. Intensively rich. Finish lasts forever. Guessed 47 Cheval Blanc. I’ve been fortunate to have this wine a few times now. It’s a freak of nature, which is very evident when sitting next to its 49 sibling. A top all time bottle for sure. — 7 years ago
The 1855 classification recognized the quality of Duhart-Milon's soil by ranking it as the only 4th growth wine in Pauillac. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot. Had this a year ago, it’s still nice! Wonderful red fruit aromas and subtle spice scents. On the palate blackberry and currants, pepper notes, tobacco and cacao, complex, generous acidity, silky tannins on a lingering finish ending with mineral notes, Wow! — 7 years ago

Rich, sappy, concentrated, fleshy, full bodied, expressive, and hedonistic with notions of dark fruit, chocolate, bacon, graphite, and wood smoke. Finishes long and saturating but smooth, showing no hard edges over the ~3 hours this bottle was consumed. A blend of 49% grenache, 25% carignan, 16% syrah, and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable now but has many more years left in it.... — 6 years ago
