2004. This is a great iteration of the esoteric Charmes-Chambertin. Tannins are yet unresolved and many years are left under this fine Burgundy! — 11 years ago

2013 vintage. Bit samey samey. Decent. But doesn't stand out. — 11 years ago

This may go down as red wine of the year for me. Which given the time of year and upcoming events is High Praise indeed. But none the less reality. Epic nose. The unmistakable smell of a slaughterhouse over summer. Meat and blood. A huge hit of licorice, leather, and smoke and cherries. The Finish lasted nearly a minute, and had a Mossy granite tone to it that reminded me of climbing in the gunks in the fog. Amazing. So fortunate to have been asked to share this with great friends. #poolwine — 8 years ago

Exceptional! — 12 years ago
Sweet and savoury nose of ripe red fruit, cherry, currant, vegetal notes, Brussel sprout, cauliflower soup, cucumber, leather, underbrush, mushroom and Asian spices. On the palate the wine showed sweet, ripe red fruit, cherry, currant, vegetal notes, cucumber, tobacco, spices, caramel as well as mineral and balsamic notes, paired with medium-plus lively acidity, fully integrated tannin, a smooth mouthfeel and incredible length. The fruit became less pronounced as time passed, to the benefit of the tertiary notes. A medium-bodied, medium-complex, well-balanced red Burgundy that drank young for its age and seemed to be good for another 10+ years. I liked it a lot. 93 — 12 years ago
The nose is different. Much more woodsy and less fruit than I’d have imagined. The flavour profile was blackberry based and again, some wood. Some eucalyptus and green grass. Also some wet soil and cloves. The tannins weren’t a punch in the face by any means, but also haven’t haven’t completely softened as you might expect in a ten year-old. The palate was uninspiring as there was a watery-ness in the mid palate. I’m not sure whether this is over the hill or just not quite there yet and in a dumb phase? Will wait and see for the final two bottles. Solid, I guess. Not yet amazing. — 7 years ago
Palate never quite matched up with the nose despite a good 30min decant. An absolute fruit and flower bomb on the nose. — 9 years ago

2008. Very good. Tart and firm acidity. Very old school style. Not overripe opulence of today's style. — 11 years ago

So...of course, if I’m drinking Maison Ilan, there is a story behind it. AFAIK, this was the last vintage that was released and I was fortunate(?) since many never received their allocation. My first of two bottles of “Aux Charmes Haut”. This was double-capsuled (no doubt by accident) which I found amusing. The cork was perfect and one of those super premium long sort of corks. The appearance in the glass was dark garnet bordering violet and a bit cloudy. From an enjoyment perspective, Day 1 was an utter waste. Too young. The bouquet was really intriguing with loads of dark and red fruits and spice but on the palate, this was completely coiled. All structure. I pushed the cork back in and waited for another day. On Day 4, I revisited, and it was in a much better spot. Ripe plums, dark cherries, bruised strawberries, forest floor, mushrooms...in that order. Still, it came across rather rustic, in a somewhat charming sort of way...but I never really fell head over heals for it either. No shortage of structure even on Day 4 gives me the feeling that the 2013 has a lot of life ahead. My last bottle will sit in the back of the cellar for some day long in the future and then I can once again recall the tales of this flash in the pan producer and what might have been. I would hold if anyone is still hanging on to these. — 6 years ago
