Knockout Brewing

Voliero

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Delectable Wine
9.4

Bright red with a pale rim. Knockout aromas and flavors of spicy red cherry, licorice, cedar and aromatic herbs. Clean, ripe and round, with saline nuances lingering nicely on the smooth but very lively finish. A classic Brunello from Voliero. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, April 2018) — 7 years ago

Les Lavières Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Lyle Fass
9.2

Lighter color than Narbantons. Big exuberant nose, ripe with dark cherries, some spice, some mineral, some earth, terrific balance and has that intense Lavieres structure. A bit more closed than the previous wines. Very very pure. Juicy and complex. This needs to be layed down. Fresh and balanced. So pure and fresh. The fruit is the star now but in 4-5 years this will be a knockout. — 8 years ago

Selection Massale Vieilles Vignes Chablis Chardonnay 2014

Vinous Favorites
9.1

This dense, vibrant wine from old vines is a knockout in the superb 2014 vintage. Orange blossom and crushed stone scents lead to a concentrated, youthfully firm palate boasting terrific lift to its citrus and saline chalky flavors. The long, mineral finish ensures good aging potential. (ST) — 8 years ago

If you order wine with your pie at Pizzeria Mozza, this is the one. Dark purple, but light in texture. Let it breathe until the pizza arrives, then enjoy how it amplifies any topping that the restaurant is serving. A knockout! — 11 years ago

Les Blanches Fleurs Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Aromatically this had a subtle smoke, sweet red fruit, and even a toasted marshmallow thing going on (I stand behind it). On the palate it's light and bright and just right. With some age on this it'd be a knockout — 8 years ago

California Syrah 2005

This is the '05 so-called "Blue Label" which isn't very blue, but I digress. I was a little rough on the last Lillian I opened, which I believe was the '06 regular bottling. It was a might underwhelming. This bottle has more highs than lows. Inky black color. Swirl the wine and you can't count the legs in the glass. Absolute knockout nose of licorice, spice and Dr Pepper. Best part of the experience for me. SO inviting. The downside is that the fruit is a little muted. Still some black fruit essence, however. And a bit hot on the finish. I guess I would still say it's best days are in the rear view mirror, but I'll hang on to a few to revisit somewhere down the road. Wonderful smooth and soft, almost a sweet aftertaste due to the ripe fruit flavors. Great right out of the bottle, little breathing necessary. A knockout vintage and beautiful wine. — 9 years ago

The Eyrie Vineyards

Melon de Bourgogne 2011

Wow, real knockout stuff. This is not domestic Muscadet - there's not much in common besides the grape. It has the bright, pure fruit but it is put together in a much fuller style, more like a white Burgundy (minus the oak) than Muscadet. I don't say Chablis because while it's an intensely mineral wine and cranked up to 11 in that department, it's not a marine minerality. The mineral element here is volcanic (and so is the soil), bringing to mind all those cliches about aromas bursting from the glass and so forth, and it's every bit as driving on the palate. — 10 years ago

Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel)

Cuvée Centenaire Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

True knockout! Powerful, dense, opulent, exotic-- I can think of many superlatives to describe the 2005. Simply a bombastic and unapologetic wine with loads of fruit and great tension, this flooded my palate with power and complexity. This has at least another 10 years of superb drinking in store, it almost pains me that we opened it so young but it was an absolute delight to drink with braised duck and lamb meatballs. A top-notch vintage from a true master of the Southern Rhone. Well worth seeking out, you can confidently hold this vintage for several more years. — 7 years ago

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Delectable Wine

Deep, bright medium red. Knockout nose combines dark raspberry, clove, licorice, white pepper, minerals and earth. Conveys incredible inner-mouth lift considering its thickness of texture and spicy intensity. Really spreads out to saturate the palate. Saline, superconcentrated, pungently mineral wine with a firm tannic spine, integrated acidity and extraordinary rising length and solidity. This is almost painful today... What a knockout nose. Huge berry fruit. High toned and very precise. Palate it silky with layered and juicy fruit with a bright fresh character. Super crunchy Alpine goodness. Amazing freshness and an appealing opulence as well due to the warmth of 2015. So balanced. — 8 years ago
