Smith Story

Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2017

A replacement for the Pairing as a Marry Edwards regular bottle. Definitely sharper and less pronounced stone fruit, but nicely balanced and went well with all dinner courses. Bottles went too fast to see how they opened, so questionable still as a stand-alone (probably great); high marks for elevating the usual crisp white wine dishes. — 6 years ago

Point Rouge Chardonnay 2007

2007 Peter Michael Point Rouge Chardonnay. HB w MnD and J&D B. We loved this wine wine so much at the Heart concert and we loved it tonight. Floral, along with notes of buttery brioche and oak. However, somewhat surprisingly, as we drank this in comp to the 2013 Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay, it did not win out. Still such a great wine that we really, really enjoyed. — 9 years ago

Knights Valley Cabernet Franc 2009

So, I’m of the opinion that Gerhard Reisacher’s sweet spot is Cabernet Franc. This 2009 isn’t quite as good as his 2007 - that is the best 100% cab franc I’ve ever had - but this is damn close. No trace of the bell pepper you typically get from people picking the fruit too early, this is a terrific wine with notes of something reminiscent of roasted chipotle pepper, black pepper, and currant. Medium-to-full bodied palate with a silky, mouthfilling feel leading to a lingering finish. This is nothing like a cab franc from The Loire - pure California - but a terrific wine nonetheless. Winemakers would do well to take lessons from Gerhart on how to handle this varietal. — 5 years ago

Still great. Past prime. Lost some acid and brightness. But sage and violet. Not the usual spice of delectus. Very soft tannins mid palate. — 6 years ago

This had a bit of VA to blow off at first. Lot of funk too. Old fig, graham cracker, stewed red and black fruits. A lot of plum and dates in the finish. Tannin structure was strong as was acidity. I’d enjoy these fairly soon. — 6 years ago

On the decline, but still showing well. Fruit has turned to a prune and plum character. Mushroom in the middle with a truffle note to the finish. I think this one had its narrow window where it showed decently well. But I think I missed that window. I tried this about an hour after it was decanted and I think the decanter killed this one.
