Doubleback

Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Zoom event with Drew Bledsoe and Josh McDaniels. Vertical from ‘07, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, ‘17 estate, and ‘18. All were exceptionally smooth and silky with good depth of fruit. Notes on the ‘18: 90% CS, 5% Malbec, 5% Merlot. Least favorite of the night. Still a good wine but perhaps a bit too young, or just different enough from the others that I liked ones with a bit more age. This wine had a little more density than the others and perhaps a little more earth and graphite coming through that masked the fruit. It still had the classic doubleback elegance of the others but I felt we were not seeing this wine’s true expression. It only had about 1 hour in the glass and perhaps I need to pull another bottle, decant for a few hours and see what it does. — 3 years ago

@Mark Turner I double decant these. How was the ‘07? And go Pats!

@Eric Urbani I thought the ‘07 was drinking great. I had several bottles over the years and it has lost some of its bravado. It was a very smooth, elegant wine but I plan to drink the remainder in my cellar over the next 2-3 years. I don’t see it holding up for another 10.

9.2

Inky, bright-rimmed ruby. Mineral-accented cherry, cassis and peony qualities on the highly perfumed nose, along with a building mineral nuance. Appealingly sweet and focused on the palate, offering juicy dark berry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that slowly deepen through the midpalate. Shows real energy and spicy lift on the persistent finish, which is given shape by smooth, even tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, April 2020)

Arterberry Maresh

Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2015

Delectable Wine
9.1

Jim Arterberry-Maresh is one of Oregon's most talented, young winemakers. His entry-level 2015 Pinot is anything but basic, delivering vibrant, mineral-laced red fruit and floral character, with striking clarity and balance. Sure, it'll age, but it's pretty gorgeous right now. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, Jan 2018) $25 — 6 years ago

Light brilliant pink. Incisive, mineral-accented citrus fruit and red berry scents, along with a suave floral nuance. Silky and sharply focused on the palate, showing juicy strawberry, orange zest and mineral qualities and a deeper suggestion of peach pit. Packs a lot of flavor but comes off lithe. The mineral and floral elements carry through a very long, precise, seamless finish. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, June 2017) — 7 years ago

Chewy and densely packed yet energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering vibrant red berry, bitter cherry, citrus pith and honeysuckle flavors and a deeper peach pit flourish. The mineral and floral notes return on the very long, precise finish. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, June 2021)

Vivid straw-yellow. A suave, intensely perfumed bouquet features fresh pear, tangerine, iodine, buttered toast and smoky minerals that show superb definition and spicy lift. Penetrating, concentrated and sharply focused; a core of juicy acidity supports powerful orchard and citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavors that deepen through the midpalate. Rich but lithe as well, with superb finishing energy and mineral-driven tenacity. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2020)

Calera Wine Company

de Villiers Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Located in the limestone-rich Gavilan Mountains, east of Monterey. Josh Jensen planted Calera's first 23 acres of Pinot Noir in 1975. De Villiers, planted in 1997 on east-facing slopes high on Mt. Harlan. Third year of drought conditions lowered the yield in ‘14, aged for 20 months in new French oak (30% new). Intense aromas of dark berry fruits with rustic spice. Palate shows tart blackberry and dark cherry flavors with smoky tobacco, oak and subtle spice. Tight tannins, lingering complex ending, very nice. — 5 years ago

Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and pit fruits, potpourri and garrigue, and an exotic spice note emerges in the glass. Stains the palate with sweet raspberry, cherry and lavender pastille flavors that steadily put on weight with air. Conveys a suave blend of power and finesse and finishes extremely long and floral, with fine-grained tannins lending discreet grip. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, February 2020)

(raised in stainless steel tanks and made with no malo) Limpid straw-yellow. Assertive, mineral-accented orchard fruit, melon and fennel aromas are sharpened by hints of ginger and lemon zest. Intense pear skin, Meyer lemon and violet pastille flavors show a suave blend of richness and delicacy thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. Closes minerally, taut and impressively long, leaving a powerful floral note behind. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, February 2018) — 6 years ago

Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir

Mills vineyard in the Mt. Harlan AVA in San Benito County. Transparent ruby turning orange at the rim. Unmistakeably Pinot Noir in the nose (the French would say "ça pinote") with morello cherries and a subtle earthy spiciness that I associate with a very good Nuits-Saint-Georges. Gains complexity in the glass, very nice smell. Medium-bodied, very balanced with fruit, spices, and present, but well-tamed tannin, fine acidity, perfectly integrated oak and a long spicy finish. Great value too. Josh Jensen never lets you down!
Love the detailed information on the back label too. 2010 vintage, abv 13,8 %. 45 euro.
