Hogs In The Woods

Bret Brothers

Mâcon-Villages Chardonnay 2017

Daffodils, butter, honey, limestone, cut grass.

Beautiful, fine carbonation. Welcome like a cool breeze in the woods. The pairing of sweet, umami, tart, savory, florality, and minerals is expert.

Liquore Strega

Saffron Liqueur

Strega is an interesting Italian liqueur...better described below. I only sporadically enjoy it, but it's fun and tasty at each sip.

"Strega is an herbal, saffron-infused liqueur deeply tied to the secret world of witchcraft. Witches are said to convene in Benevento to perform rituals and honor Il Noce, the sacred walnut tree. (The lower part of the logo shows witches dancing with demons around Il Noce.) According to legend, Giuseppe Alberti, son of a grocer, saved a witch from falling out of a tree in the woods. In gratitude, she gave him the recipe for an elixir, which the Alberti family began selling in 1860, perhaps as a curative or restorative.

The liqueur's proprietary recipe is a mix of 70 herbs and spices which include Ceylon cinnamon, Florentine iris, Italian Apennine juniper, Samnite mint, fennel, and saffron. Saffron is the key to Strega's signature yellow color and it shares the spotlight with mint and juniper as the most pronounced flavors within the herbal mixture."

Domaine Jean Chartron

Clos de la Pucelle Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2011

Domaine Jean Chartron established in 1859 owns 13 hectares of vineyards - 16 appellations - 9 of which being in Puligny-Montrachet. The soil is a mixture of clay siliceous sand and lime components. 40 years the average age of the vines. Hand harvesting, neither herbicides, nor chemical pesticides are used in the vineyards. Behind the alchemical balance of the wine aging (élevage) in the woods, at the source of the new oak barrels there's always Allier and Vosges.
Even though 2011 in Burgundy's one of the most premature vintage in 300 years, I must admit that this bottle of the monopole Clos de la Pucelle was astonishingly crisp, persisten texture, a solid core of broom in bloom blowing up in your mouth, a shiny flow of mineral essence. Sourness and honey they were so well blended to spread the unity of opposites all over the go-between glass among you the others around and the wine.. though one bottle was a too much little thing! http://www.bourgogne-chartron.com/

Fattoria dei Barbi (Colombini)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Takes its name from the free-spirited gentleman named Bruscone who lived in the woods of the Barbi Estate. Enticing Ruby with sweet red berry aromas and earthy notes. On the palate cherry, licorice and sweet plum showing nicely. Fine tannins, well balanced on lingering finish ending with earthy herb tones. Needs decanting or cellar aging. Very nice! — 6 years ago

Pur Breton Anjou Cabernet Franc 2017

Surprisingly one of the better wines I’ve had in a bit, at Hen of the Woods in Burlington, VT. Would not have guessed it was just 2 years old. The red and black fruit on the nose is great, and it expresses a lot of earthy / grassy notes on the palate. Perfect acidity on the finish, and excellent with a very good fatty ribeye. JL tasting Portugal Brira interior 2/20/18. $21. All Viognier. Interesting nose that's complex floral laced with stones. Deeper color. Six months in oak. Very fresh and acidic, lively on palate with hints of wood. Woods comes through in long acidic finish. Complex. Interesting that aromatic on palate. Can age. Says what Viognier was like originally. — 8 years ago

Giulio Cocchi

Vermouth di Torino

Deep amber color. Aromas of birch bark, vanilla, old linens, and mahogany. It smells like autumn leaves in the deep woods after rain, and it tastes like wood, too—birch and pecan, walnut, sarsaparilla. There's roundness at the front and sharpness at the back, and the finish is bitter nut. Pour straight over ice or add tonic and a splash of white port. 16% abv | $28 (New Hampshire) — 12 years ago
